It took approximately eight fun-filled years to perfect all the essentials we need for our standup paddling excursions. I will share several useful ideas and essentials that Nate and I have cumulatively come up with, over time.

When we first met, we both had a blast exploring and experimenting with new ways to enjoy standup paddling.

Nate won me over with an ingenious first date. “Suzi, meet me at Saguaro Lake, 1st boat ramp at 6:00 PM,” he said.

I showed up as the warm sun was setting, Nate had two boards all equipped with lights, PFDs, cooler packed on deck, and we paddled out to the middle of the quiet, still lake.

We stopped under a starry fall night, and he then preceded to cook up a hot Mountain House meal of beef stroganoff, with his jet boil, along with ice cream for dessert! Floating and dining on your SUP beats any fancy restaurant’s ambiance!

Here are our essentials for your safety and enjoyment:

PFDs: We find the Hobie waist packs the most functional, and they stay out of the way of your arms when paddling. They deploy easily, but I have found when testing them, try not to cinch them too tight. Just enough so it stays in place.

Along the lines of safety, we love paddling in numbers, and enjoy our quality friendship time so much in groups. If paddling solo, perhaps mention to someone your itinerary, and pack your leash, PFD, wear something bright, a whistle, etc.

Sunscreen: In Arizona, we are fortunate to have over 300 days of sunshine to SUP in this desert state! Therefore, we certainly need to protect ourselves with SPF lip balm, sunscreens. My personal favorites are a 50 SPF face shield and all types of SPF clothing.

Eye Protection: With the bright glare reflecting from all angles while on water, Hobie Polarized sunglasses are number one. We choose ones that form to our faces’ contour, and have side protection with wide arms. The bright blue Cruz & Bondi models are number one, mostly because they are so comfortable on our faces! (And beautifully stylish!)

Hats: A wide brim is a good idea for sun protection on your face, neck, scalp and hair. I choose bright colored ones that will help to make me more visible to oncoming boat traffic. Straps under your chin are a smart idea, so you do not lose it.

Carbon fiber paddles: They are the lightest for longer times spent paddling. Heavier construction paddles are just as good, and have an added benefit. I believe they can make you stronger, if you are aware of the proper biomechanics of your stroke.

There are many other essentials we all like to personally have, and we are happy to share more in the upcoming months!
