Looking at the hobie 18 assembly manual, it appears that the "proper" way to rig the furler is to use a Clevis pin and split ring through the top hole to set the mast rake/forestay (page 9, figure 18), and attach the tack of the jib using a shackle through the lower hole (page 16, figure 39). Interesting, I had never noticed that detail before. I had always used a shackle through the top hole to secure the forestay, and attached the tack of the jib with a second shackle through the loop of the first one. I may have to try doing it the "right" way sometime and see how it works out!
