You can make the axle adjustable if you purchase a section of aluminum tube / pipe about foot long and with an ID a little over 2”. The pipe acts as a sleeve over the axle. You cut the axle in half and one end of the sleeve is permenantly bolted to one of thr axle shafts. The other end, drill a hole through the axle and the sleeve, holding the cradles at the 8 foot width. Then another hole through the sleeve 6” farther out so the cradles can be extended to the 8’-6” setting. Use a clevis pin or a bolt to switch between settings. We had both an 18 and a 20 for a few years and that’s how we did it with one set of wheels.
Found a pic of the extender. Very simple design.
