14-16 compatibility

Hey all you "experts" (has been drip under pressure) are the 14 and 16 rudder parts the same? I have been looking for some adjustable upper and lower castings and think I found some on a 14. What do you think?

The upper / lower castings and rudders are identical. 16's tillers are longer, as is the tiller crossbar.

I just swap the cross bar off my 16 and put on the 14 one I have and use my 16 rudders on my 14. I guess I would personally say yes to the drill pattern question. They are the same parts.

Yes, the rudder drill pattern is the same. I'm using an older set of 16 Euro carbon rudders on my 14 - completely interchangeable (with adjustable upper castings).

Why do you need adjustable upper castings? Is the rake different? With the same drill pattern, it isn't as easy as just slipping the high performance blades onto the 14??

Hmmm....last time I sailed a 14 was in 1984. So everyone just clear out and stay away from me! I do NOT have a license or police authorization to sail one of these things!!

You don't NEED adjustable upper castings, but the hole pattern is slightly different for the adjustable vs. the non-adjustable castings, so you can't easily switch rudders between the two. The adjustable upper castings allow you to make minute adjustments to accomodate slightly different hole placements when you are switching rudders between boats.

The first time I raced my 14, I lifted the entire rudder system from my 16 (changed the tiller arms and tiller crossbar), so I didn't have to touch anything. I used bolts instead of rivets to attach the tiller arms to the upper castings.

I did the same thing Matt did, just a little black tape around the 14 rudder arms to take the slop out and some nuts and bolts. Its alot cheaper than owning 2 sets of EPOs!!

Peter Nelson will be using my just finished mint condition 14 at the NA's. STAY OUT OF HIS WAY! I once witnessed him arrive from the golf course 5 min before a race. His excellent crew was there waiting with the boat completely prepped. He got out of the car and stepped on the boat. Thought he was hot stuff! We all watched from shore as he slipped on his dry suit standing on the tramp smiling at us all. See Peter is the Division 4 H16 expert. He knew he was going to walk all over us and he didn't even have to try. Moments later he drove his boat into a cement dock. My point is please be very clear on how to make the rudder system work!

I have a dollar that says Peter and my boat finish top ten. Takers?? (Are there cement docks on this course?)

You'll just want to stay upwind from chris. Less chance of parts blowing off his boat, and hitting yours.

I actually have my good mast ready for this event. Plus, there are no Cat trax actually ON the boat, so I can't lose those and there are no license plate on my boat, so I can't lose those........the only thing left is the 3 cans of Busch Light I keep in the tramp bag and I won't let those blow off the boat no matter what!
