Howdy, I just took my new (used, but new to me) Hobie 14 out for the first sail. I have sailed 16's & 18's a bit but seem to have trouble tacking with the 14. The lack of a jib proves quite a challenge. Anyone have any advice?

Thanks,
Bill

Bill,

Hi! I'm Bob Curry and I own 2 Hobie 14s. One is kept at the FWYC and the other at home on a trailer. Email me at [email protected] and lets get together! I also work on Eglin at the 46 weather squadron and am on the global email listing if you want to contact me during the week. I know the secret for tacking 14s!

Bob

Hey Bob, wish I'd seen this post when I went TDY to Eglin about a year ago! Heh.

Anyway, on my H16 I usually come up close-hauled before trying to tack, but on the 14 now (after the 2nd sail, today) I'm starting to try tacking from a close reach so that I've got more speed going in. On this lake there aren't much in the way of waves to "tack over," so the hint I read in another thread about that doesn't help much. I guess the idea of sheeting in tight while heading up, then dumping the main at head-to-wind sounds like a good plan... Any other tips y'all might have would be great!!

Here's a pic of the boat taken just today:

(New sig coming soon. :) )

If anyone knows how to tack a 14 its Bob Curry. I got to see first hand how well he tacks, jibes and basically makes a boat go FAST when I had the pleasure of racing against him in the MW East in Florida last year.

BTW: Jamie, the new pic of your 14 looks WAAAAYYY better than the last time you posted a pic (demasted)
