Hobie sailors in North Carolina

Hi I am a newbie to 16's but have raced monohulls for years. Hoping to find other Hobie sailors near Jordan Lake that may be interested in sailing together and perhaps getting some fleet action together. Hope y'all are out ther and willing to come play and have fun

I usually sail at Jordan lake at Vista Point. Most Hobie sailors use that launch area so you will meet others there. There are several who post here. If this warm weather continues, I expect to be out there in the next couple of weekends. Kerr Lake is a great sailing lake but a little far for me to drag the boat. I used to keep a monohull, a Marshall Sanderling, at Steele Creek but got tired of the 2 hour drive to get there.

Thanks for the response. I too sail from Vista and in fact will be camping at Poplar with the Hobie this weekend. Would love to go for a sail and get some pointers/shoot the breeze

I sail at Jordon on occasion as well. I also use Vista Point. I may make it up there sometime this week (Thursday is looking decent for some wind). There is also a group of sailors in the Wrightsville Beach area that I sail with. NC doesn't have an active fleet at the moment, but there are a lot of hobie sailors spread around.

Most of the people I sail with single-hand their 16's. We'll all be up in Virginia Beach in May for the Sail the Bay Regatta. I think there are about eight people talking about taking their 16's and sailing solo. You should look into it. You can check out the "local" race shedule on the Eastern Multihull Sailing Association site, but something seems to being going on with it right now.

Thanks James - My buddy and I are hitting the water (not literally I hope) tomorrow afternoon. He has a J24 and Escow background and I come from 505/powerboat background, so we are still figuring out the whole cat thing. As with Howard, it would be awesome to hook up - would you guys be interested in some racing on Jordan this year? I'd be up for a laugh in my old 81 16

This will be the second time - first was to make sure she floated. I bought an older HObie that was neglected but the right price. PLanning on teaching my family to sail. Let me know what time you want to meet up tomorrow. I have taken the afternoon off work so should be able to get a good sail in and my confidence would be higher with another boat out there for sure

I don't think I can make it tomorrow but hope to get it all together soon. What is the water temperature now? I would rather not put on the wet suit. My boat is in the back yard covered yet from the winter.

I'm afraid I'm not into racing. I tried it a couple of times but didn't enjoy it. I belonged to the Hobie fleet in Charlotte a few years ago because I was sailing at Lake Norman most of the time. Now it is worth your life to get out in the traffic on Norman. I raced with that fleet. Look forward to sailing with you all in the near future.

I don't know the lake temp. I would guess it is in the low 50's. I just got back from the Spring Fever Regatta on Lake Hartwell in Georgia and the water temp was 57. I wore a shorty wetsuit and went over on Saturday. There was a little shock when I went in, but I was fine. It will be hot, but you have to dress for the water.

I enjoyed meeting you all and appreciated the chance to crew with James. Now I have the incentive to get the cover off my boat and get it to the lake.

I was surprised at how good the wind was today and how warm the water is already.
