National weather service shows 8 to 16 mph tomorrow and that is about perfect. I don't think it will be a problem. I am hooked up and ready to leave in the morning. I was worried with earlier forecasts that there wouldn't be enough wind.

Any AI sailors near Wilmington area trolling these posts want to get together for a sail some time?

Hi Guys,
I sail at Kerr Scott Reservoir in Wilkes County. Have a 1977 Hobie 16 in really good shape considering the age. Have a question about Itellicast for wind reports. Went to the site and only spot in NC is Wilmington. Of course I can see my county on the map so is that all you do? Looks like today is the day to go as it shows green today and nothing Friday or Saturday. Is it that easy? I have been wondering how to find out the wind report and found it on one of your posts here. Only been out once on boat since I got it with any good wind when Hurricane Ike was offshore. That was a blast. As soon as I think I can hang with ya, I have a trailer and would love to cruise down to catch the breeze with some other guys. Not many sailboats on Kerr Scott as only about 4 miles long and very narrow. Makes for some exciting tacks though. Have a Great Day!
John

Intellicast will give you a good picture of most of NC. You are right, just look at your area. I also use the National Weather Service where you can pick a very specific spot and get the predicted winds. Another site is Weather underground that gives hourly predictions.

Do you ever sail at Lake Norman? It has gotten so crowded that I would only go there during the week. How far would it be to go to Kerr Lake (Buggs Island Lake) in VA. That is the best sailing lake around but a little too far for me. Kerr Lake is about 50% bigger than Lake Norman.

Thanks for the info... I am going to look at it now as I am itching to go out today should the winds be high enough. By the way, what is the minimum wind to have a good time solo? Like flying a hull?
No, I haven't been to Stormin Norman in years as the crowds scared me away even with a power boat. I have a Corolla for towing so I could go anywhere time permitting.
Thanks,
John

I'm only guessing. Your weight has a lot to do with it, and where you put it... but maybe 8-10 to fly a hull? I don't really take wind speed measurements while sailing, but that's my best guess.

Cool! I am only 170 and kinda hyper... looking forward to a windy Saturday eve as I plan to fly the hull all over this "pond" solo! Thank God the last time the wife went out was with Hurricane Ike offshore and kinda scared her since nobody told me how to set up squat and I actually had the rudders UNLOCKED the WHOLE 2 to 3 hours we sailed! Boy! that made for some pumped forearms and one wife who DOES NOT like the Hobie as the wind seemed to vortex or "pick up" everytime we neared the banks which was LOTS! and when I would go to tack it was like you floored a six cylinder and boy she did not like that at all!! Not to mention it was EXTREMELY hard to turn the boat at full tilt with the rudders straight out behind the boat!!! We about slammed the bank on multiple occasions... hahahaha... WHAT A RUSH!!! AND TO THIS I SAY..." IF YOU ARE NOT LIVING ON THE EDGE YOU ARE TAKING UP WWWWWWAAAAAYYYYYYYY TOOOOOOO MUCH SPACE!!!!!!!! YUK YUK YUK... I dare you to try it in gale force winds for an hour or two. Then tell me it is nothing!!! LOL!!! Good thing she can't see this post as my Butt would be TOAST if she knew I told this story online!! HAHAHA... LOOK forward to sailing with you guys as I live for excitement and can't wait to wring this thing out beside another!!! CHEERS AND HAPPPPPPY SAILING THIS WEEKEND!!!! YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHHHHHHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!
johnboy

O YEAA.... IF YA CAN'T KEEP UP JUST HONK SUCKER......
(and of course I know that it will probably be me that can't keep up but don't ya just want to thrash my butt on my old 77 hobie after that challenge?!?! LLLLLLLOOOOKKKIINNGGG FORWARD TO THE DAY!!!!! BRING IT ONNNNNNN!!!!!

So did you guys go out yesterday afternoon? Man, what a blow at Kerr Scott! My first singlehanded and what a wild ride! First trapeeze lesson as well. Trap wasn't too hard but as the afternoon passed the wind increased to whitecaps and one wild ride! Had the lake to my self and one Hobie something with outriggers like the adventure island but bigger with 2 aboard and no danger of flipping. I went over 3 times and loved it. At 170lbs I was hopeless of self righting and had a water sack and still to light. I put a loop in my righting line and enlisted a passing motorboat to share a line, thru the loop and a slight pull with me hanging on and up she came easily all 3 times. Cheating, I know, but very effective. This cat may be only doing 20 or so but feels more like 90 out on the wire and gusty winds threatening to flip constantly. No steady breeze here. I can barely walk today I am so sore in my quads, shoulders, hands etc... And yes, I would like a little cheese with my whine! LOL... I've done alot of interesting sports but this one seems to be my favorite! What a GAS!!! Good news is my new neighbor said he had a 16 in his past and I should have a righting partner next weekend. Wind was howling here this morning as well but too sore here to even think about riding that sucker two days in a row! Cheers!
John

I think I'm going to use this weekend to take care of some repairs. I've got to inject some epoxy into a spot I delaminated during a capsize and I want to re-gel my hull bottoms before I polish and wax them. I'm tired of having those dull yellow hulls. I'll definately want to get out at least one more weekend before the Virginia Beach race though. Are any of you interested in going up there for that one? It's a well run event with a great group of people. I always have a blast.

Hi from NH - used to live in Chapel Hill and Durham during the time the lake was being constructed - don't ask how long ago that was!

My son's getting married in Durham this summer and we've heard that skiing in the lake is not good due to floating debris. Do any of you know whether this is true? If so, how the heck do you avoid the stuff in your cats?

I've enjoyed reading your posts - takes me home.

Bruce,

When I was out on Jordan about 2 weeks ago, I didn't notice any debris. Usually when the lake level rises in the spring, debris that has collected floats in, but wind will blow it to the leeward shores. I sailed a couple of hours that day and never saw anything.

Hey Bruce, we ski and wakeboard all year round. Have only had a couple of times that debris was an issue and that was after a big storm. Never had an issue in the cat. Love Jordan Lake :) WE may be moving to NH in a year or so so made me chuckle to read the post

Cheers

That's great to hear - thanks, guys. I'm looking for something to keep the groomsmen happy before the wedding. Can you tell me how to get to Vista Point? I'd love to get down there and watch some sailing too if anyone's out while I'm there.

Drummer,what part of NH?

Bruce,

If you come down 55 from Durham, turn right on 64 and drive over the lake (a few miles). About a mile west of the lake you will come to a traffic light. On your right will be a storage facility and across from that a gas station. Turn left at the light and follow that road to the end. It takes you to the park entrance and you keep going straight. There is another road from the Durham area, highway 751. It parallels 55 but is much closer to the lake. Again you would turn right onto 64.
