It's hard to say. When I bought my boat, I had no idea what I was buying. It could have been a hunk of junk and I wouldn't have known the difference. As it turned out, I got a really good boat (1985) with a good trailer for $700. I started out with this...

...but ended up with this 6 years later . . .

...after an unknown amount of $$$$$$ spent and some wasted on trial and error projects. I was provided with valuable info by the two Matts Bounds/Miller as well as many others that helped me along the way. I have enough spare parts from failed projects to build another boat. Sailing solo most of the time instilled in me a need to make thinks easier. As I read your post, I could see myself. I expect that something similar might happen to you. I enjoy sailing but I also enjoy working on my boat as well. The guys out here are pretty honest and are unlikely to give you any false info. Hindsight is always 20-20. Take your time and ask plenty of questions. Wait for a multitude of answers before making a decision. It has taken me a year to put together the spi system on my boat and cost me only about $400 for everything. I almost paid that much for my 6:1 main system. I've discovered in many cases, there is no right or wrong. It's whatever works best for you. I'm sure you'll do fine.
