Masthead fly or similar

I'm wondering what people here consider to be the best gadget for apparent wind - i.e. some kind of masthead fly, or bridle fly.

I just purchased the minibob mast float kit, so I will have that on top of my mast - I guess whatever else I get will have to be compatible.

I also just purchased the Easy Rite righting bungee system. I'm interested in people's experience with it, and how it compares with the "Hawaiian" righting system, and other righting systems. Any tips on attaching/using it?

i have a davis bridle on mine....seems like it would work, the only thing im worried about is pitchpoling and the thing ripping off. As for the bungee, tie two smaller pieces of line around the rudder casting pins and then loop through the ends of the righting line

The best wind indicators I have found are two pieces of yarn tied about 2/3 way up each bridle wire. The one on the windward side will give the best wind direction information. Some people use cassette tape but I found that it will tear off when trailering at highway speed. The yarn doesn't.

Anything you put on top of the mast will be nearly impossible to see from the tramp. A Telocat wind bird mounted on the forestay adjuster works for me. They are kind of pricey but they work well especially in light variable winds which is when you really need it.

I use the Telocat too and love it in light winds especially as well. I have a mast bob but don't use it for wind direction much. I also have used cassette tape on the shrouds and they are great. I usually just rip them off b/f trailering. I have so many tapes from the '80s that I doubt I'll ever run out lol But I"ll give yard a try just for grins, thanks hrtsailor

I have the Village People tied on the on bridle.. But I am using the 8 track tape.. I figure that works perfect on the Tequila Sunrise boat


I have been meaning to test the cassette tape and 8 track side by side...

8-track is the on;y way to go!.

Cassette tape is too narrow and thin.

Man you guys are ancient...I have no 8 tracks......

What the heck is an 8-track!?!? Just kidding.....I threw all mine away many moons ago and now I find out they have a use. Bummer! I can still remember where the track changed on certain classic rock songs I listen to even now. Nothing like that "clunk" in the middle of your favorite song.

Another option is 8mm computer tapes.

They're readilly available and are usually free if you know who to ask.

Simillar size to 8 track tape but more available.

I used 8 track tape in the 80's on my 16 and it was the best. Some of the songs were crap but that's another story.
