Hi group,

I picked up an H16 last year for $200.00, with the trailer. Found a set of used sails on e-bay fr $225.00. Had to install a new mast base (it was missing?) that was $54.00. I though I was all set but then once I set it up I found the trampoline was in need of replacement, I bought an aftermarket one for $195.00. So all said and done I have a sailable hobie 16 for about $700.00! I am new to sailing and live on a lake in Conneticut so can't wait for wind to get out there! My sails do not have battens yet, can these be fabricated or is it not worth it? I have not been able to find any used ones yet. Is it ok to sail without the battens?

Like the aussie said battens are a must... It helps the sail shape from what I understand. I live in Norwich and just bought a 16 2 years ago and fixed it up. I sail tuesdays and wednesdays on my days off if there is wind. If you need battens you could go to Megrews boats in Charlestown RI next to Westerly. they are an authorized hobie dealer and have helped me a bunch. And if you sign up with the local Hobie fleet 448. It costs like $15 to join and you can go for group sails in Rhode Island, CT, MA. you can crew on other peoples boats to learn the ropes. But for that $15 you also get 10% off parts at Megrews boats. shoot me an email if you want to sail or anything kyle.gless at yahoodotcom

Kyle,

thanks for the info. I went to Megrews today and got a full set of battens, a new tiller handle and a wind indicator.....it was painful but I am ready to sail now. I will look into Fleet 448 as it seems I could gain lots of knowledge from you all. Life is pretty busy right now so maybe later this summer we can sail together! thanks for all your help!

you need battens for sure on the main sail, but i would reccomend them on the jib but there not neccessary. they are pretty expensive so i would definetly look for some used ones
