upgrading

I have a Capri Omega 14 and I think I want a hobie 16, wave, or maybe the bravo. i have done a lot of research on hobies, but my mom thinks that my boat is better what is the best way to convince her? we don't live near a dealer(Kennesaw, Georgia), so i cant show her any. Could mom be right? is a hobie worth it?

Better in what way is the question... better in that you have one already is the likely answer. You won't find a person in these forums that would agree with her. There is NOTHING better than a cat!

My Adventure Island has a mirage drive, goes on the roof rack of my civic, can be rigged in no time, doubles as a kayak, and even then can be foot powered, paddle powered, or both. Easy on the assumptions there Matt. Cat's are great, but Adventure Island's aren't too shabby either!

Oh, and to the original poster, Buy a Cat! If I had the money I'd buy a Wave for it's ease of use, passenger capacity, simplicity of set up, and overall durability. The Bravo is cool but a bit too small for what I would use it for, and a Hobie 16 would be more boat then I needed. Nobody is a better judge of what you like then you. Except mom... Mom always knows best... unless she says not to by a Hobie... then she's wrong.

But if you need to convince Mom, talk about the way that Hobie stands behind their products. Mom's like that kind of stuff.

Point well taken, but coming in the sail forums and comparing to the three cats they listed was the intended answer. Should have simply said "Hobie" is better!

The forums! Another reason to buy a Hobie. Literally thousands of users from all over the world who have the same boat as you and can talk about anything related to the boat. You're never the first to have an issue, and you'll always know from user's how that issue has been dealt with.

I have sailed a lot of cats as a sailing instructor. I am here to tell you the Hobie Wave inpressed me a lot. One day I was bored. We were low on students so I took out the wave as it is easy to rig and singlehand. So I decided I wanted to fly a hull. Well there was not quite enough wind so I moved to the leeward side of the boat (note: at this point you can't see in front of you very well) I forgot to mention to stay out of the chop I am actually sailing in the marina inlet. So I'm cruising along pretty good and all the sudden I duck down to see if anything is in front of me. Guess what? There was...the marina entrance day marker on a nice big pressure treated piling. By the time I looked, the piling had already passed the tips of the hulls I barely had time to brace lol. So POW!! I take the full force of the collision right where the wires come together for the forestay. I was thinking "Man, they are gonna be hot back in the office." So I climb forward and inspect the damage. Didn't take long because aside from some suspicious saw dust, there was none. A very rugged boat indeed. Please don't try this at home or in the water for that matter

p.s. Matt I would love you more if you found me a 3.5 lower mat casting lol

We've got to get scoutsailer while (s)he's young. The first order of business is to get the kid on a cat, any cat, and (s)he'll never go back to tippy, boring, slow monohulls.

Thanks for all your input! my mom now agrees that i should get a hobie, but i still cant decide what to do. she thinks i should get a wave, but i think i can only get 2k max out of my current boat, so i think i should get a used 16. what would you do?

Seriously, a used 16 is a decent boat but is a lot for one person. The wave is nice as it only has one sail and easier to handle. If you look around you might be able to pick up a wave for about 2k. I have seen them occasionally. I think even the 17 might be a better fit but that is just my opinion. I have soloed 16s before but I am a really big guy and can hold them down and right them alone.
