I'm new, and over my head (and loving it).

I have been sailing with a friend on his old Bangel Hobie 16 for a couple years now. I instantly fell in love (I'm sure you understand). A couple months ago I noticed one of my dad's old friends had one parked on a trailer in his yard, burried under a bunch of moss, pine needles, leaves and sticks. I asked him what he was doing with it - he said take it.

So now I have a hobie of my very own. Sweet! It needs some work, and lots of parts. I'm hoping to sail her next summer. In the mean time, I need lots of advice.

I'm a professional Commercial Auto Body Tech. That's gobbledegook for "I do body work on semi trucks." I'm no stranger to fiberglass repairs, so the holes and missing chunks in the hulls don't scare me. The missing parts, however, do. Since it was free I figure I aught to do this as cheeply as possible. As a full-time blue collar shmuch, part time student, I have little disposable income. You see where this is going...

So I have this Hobie 16 that I know little about, which is also missing lots of parts. I could use some direction. It came with: trailer, hulls, aluminum structure, tramp, all the cables, right rudder and center bar, and the COMP TIP mast. A good friend gave me an old (beat up) set of sails without battons, and a brand new halyard for a comp tip sail. I'll need to find everything else.

At first glance I can tell I'll need: A boom, all the lines, left rudder as well as the aluminum lock bracket (name?), the tiller bar, and the main traveler, along with various other broken pullies and cams that need to be replaced.

I can easily give the hulls a wicked custom paint job, as well as the mast, aluminum frame, and trailer. I figure this boat can be pretty cool when I'm finaly finished, but what would you do in the mean time to get her in the water?

Where do you suggest I try sourcing really cheep used parts? Where can I find out more info about this particular Hobie? Where can I find a detailed list of everything my boat should have? Am I crazy for taking this on? Do you have a psychologist you can reccomend? Or maybe just a bar?

A good source of information on Hobie 16's is here;

There you can find a nice parts diagram for 14's and 16's (they are very similar) to get an idea of what you are missing. Both this site and http://www.thebeachcats.com have classified sections where you can sometimes find sellers parting out a boat. There is one guy on thebeachcats.com that has a standing ad for used Hobie parts. (http://www.thebeachcats.com/classifieds ... .php?cat=4)

Another source of parts might be the local craigslists. Depending on how much of your boat is missing, you might even consider picking up a second H16 where the hulls are trash and just use it for parts.

My suggestion to start is to replace what is missing and then go sail it. That will give you a better idea of what needs to be fixed first. I suggest you skip the psychologist, buy a case of beer and have some fun while you work on. And, believe me, these boats are fun. But, you already know that.

Well I forgot to write down the numbers yesteday, but I have them now.
And the lucky number is: CCMP2398M80H - A1. Above the serial number on the port hull, "A2" is scribed, and is hardly readable.

So what information can be gleaned from this number?

My friend Clark, who introduced me to Hobies, looked it over and said that it's definatly worthy of a restoration.

I live in Buffalo NY, and the boat is at work in Angola, about 30 miles south of Buffalo. I will be sailing her mainly on lake Erie, but I plan on visiting some other small lakes in the Western NY region.

Based on the "...80H" it looks like you have a 1980 model built in March of 1980.

I like thousands of others on this forum have old hobie parts laying all over the dang place. if you come across something you need drop me a line and I'll bet I have it.

I just traded a set of rudders (excellent shape) to another forum member for a case of beer and postage. Hey that's just the way I roll, not looking to make it rich selling old hobie stuff and if you need it and I've got it we'll figure out the current Corona exchange rate for the items you need.

What I know I have;

Seaway Main Sheets - upper & lower tiller castings - Rear Crossbar w/traveler track & corner castings -Trap sets- tiller tubes
extra mastbase - Drain plug housings - Upper and lower gudgeons - complete mast w/halyard - step links - 7 hole stay adjusters - Black boom w/gooseneck - Bridle wires - Jib Halyard w/lower forestay - and lots of nuts and bolts

NEW parts are pricey - so surely to find some used items on here is the way to go. Else keep watching craigs list for another boat.

My first boat was listed for 1000.00 - I paid 450.00 w/trailer

My 2nd boat was 2200.00 I paid 1700.00 (lots of extras 3 sails etc) w trailer

My 3rd (bought it about 3 weeks ago) was 450 and I paid 175.00 no trailer

The thing is - I almost a complete boat for 175.00. So you can pull the parts from another boat! It was complete except sail was dirty and tired. Needed a new tramp. So under you get a good deal on parts form members. Look for complete boats. (cheap).

I have 2-3 extra rudders, 1-2 extra booms lots of other stuff too.
