Control line leaks.

That surprises me. The lines are inside tubes that are supposed to be lead to an eye inside the boat forward and high enough to prevent leaking up thrpoug the tubes. Check the internal routing of the tubes and the connections at the aft exit holes if possible.

I haven thad a look inside the Sport yet, although I can tell you after replacing the rudder line on my Outback yesterday that the plastic tubes in it do not run to an eye, they just flop where they want to.
The connections at the aft exit holes on the sport are all good, but I tell you, when Im in it the stern really dips into the water.

My Error...

I am told by engineering that the tubes are not held high inside the boat. "Something they will have to look at" is what they said.

The Tandem and now the Adventure look to be the boats that have suspended cables.

I recall a post for a fix of the line 'slap' that would apply in this situation. Cut a noodle in 2 foot sections then long ways half way through. Put the control cables inside the noodle and wedge the noodle up into the side wall channel.

I've had my Outback since Christmas 05'. I couldn't figure out but knew there was a problem when it was so sluggish going down Econfina Creek. When trying to pull it up on the dock, urgh! It was so heavy and I knew that there was water inside. Sure enough, it was where the drive gear inserted into the hull.

I just wanted to say how great Hobie was to send me another hull and that Bass Pro Shops in Destin was great in how they handled the problem.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my Outback and have taken it down creeks, the shores of North Florida and it has even traveled to West Palm Beach and Islamorada with me! Great kayak!

and now I'm looking for that sail to add to it. . .

Has anyone who owns an Adventure been getting water inside the hull?

I'm buying two hobie Kayaks in the middle of feb and i'm wondering if certain colors are more subject to cracking than others. I ordered them both in the sand color . It seems that after viewing some of these forums this color for some reason tends to crack more, is this true? I'm new to this sport and i'm looking forward to using the heck out of these yaks...
any input would be greatly appreciated.
thanks,baldyaker

First...we are making ALOT of kayaks.

Sand and any dark colors are a higher percentage of issues than lighter colors as the pigments are harder to mold. We are also selling a very high percentage in the darker colors. Yet, the overall percentage of any warranty claims is still low.

We have seen just a few issues with Adventures thus far.

Matt

Been out several times so far.

Big A handles very well going into wind & chop. I guessed wrong twice on which way to go in AM and afternoon winds got me coming home. But she easily plows right through compared to commercial cheapie rentals.

But the one time I was running down swell I definitely got more than a cup through the rudder tubes.

Strongly suggest you get those babies up high close to the upper deck skin. I am told by engineering that the tubes are not held high inside the boat. "Something they will have to look at" is what they said.
Running out to the FADs I could be 1-2 hours coming back with water coming in the tubes on return. I can live with that time. But if it's longer than I could have a problem. Lower freeboard, more water, etc. not to mention a (censored) to get out on the beach.

BTW is that problem worse or better under sail running down wind? Don't have a sail rig yet as I'm waiting for your publicized new one.

Aloha

Dan

Transom steering line tube leaks? Sailing vs pedaling?

When pedaling the transom is down and the bows rise. When sailing the bow is pushing down more. I would guess that sailing is less of an issue here.

I am wondering is injecting something into the tubes would work to help block any water. They have also been considering a heavier grade of spectra to help fill the tube openings.

Concerning leaks, I want to thank Matt, the designers, and production facilities for stepping up to the plate. The Outback and Adventure models appear to be leak free now. Crashing waves over the bow, intense rain storms, following seas swallowing up the back of the kayak have not left a drop of water in the hull. Great job Hobie Mirage team!

Let me try out this YouTube thang.
In October, the temps were about 90 so the wet ride was a welcome relief.
Sometimes it is fun to get a little wet - a short video of a 45 minute fun ride down the Tensaw River in Alabama.
PS - Not a single drop of water inside the 2009 Adventure hull. :D
