Hi all,

Just going through Murrays and creating shopping list and found the becket adapter and decided to post my first question. Don't know what it is. I searched and read the posts which included "becket adapter" but none of them described what it is.

A little intro - i sailed a H14 ~15 years ago (or more..) then sailed a H16 and then got deep into windsurfing. Finally got burned out getting skunked by the wind here in western NY and gave up. Recently, a windsurfing friend bought a Supercat 17 so i started looking. I fell into a near perfect, freshwater, original owner 1986 H18 with trailer for $1600. I found your forum and now i'm hooked. It's all i think about - reminds me of my windsurfing addiction. I am familiar with forums and searching and FAQ sections and posting pictures so i will be posting pics soon as well as many many more questions ! :?

I am excited to begin the restoration of my boat. Like i said - it's near perfect so it's more like an upgrade. I need to do the hull reinforcement because it's a redline boat (absolutely no cracks on hulls in front of front crossbar), replace the access ports with screw type, i'm thinking of adding rear access ports while i'm at - thoughts ? I need to change the boom pulleys to a single block. I have the old style rudders - they are black fiberglass type - are these okay ? What's the deal with the downhaul system that is adjustable while sailing - is it something i should add ?

Great forum - i'm very excited to have a boat again. I don't know what i did before forums - most of the things i've read i would never have figured out on my own. Matt Miller is obviously the King of this forum - thanks Matt - i have spent days reading your posts (as well as many others).

Will post pics of the boat as soon as i can.

Yes... lots of good help in these forums. It is the most active forum in the industry I'm sure! Over 100,000 posts now. Lots of old timers with skills to share. If I don't have the answer Matt Bounds will... if he doesn't... someone here will!

Not sure what a Becket adapter is... may make a sheeve from a becket to add more purchase. You get a Hobie catalog yet?

The "old" black rudders are likely EPO? They are good.

If the 'becket adapater' is what I think I remember seeing as a close-out item from Murray's, it looks like a replacement slide car for the H18 jib sheet blocks which allows a separate line for jib track adjustment instead of the standard pin selected car, similar to a souped up H16 system. You'd still need to rig a line, block, cleat and shock cord per side for adjusting.

I think the purpose is to allow adjusting from the other side of the tramp.

It may be just the jib car itself, for use with alternative (to Seaway) jib blocks (my 18 came with jib cars and Oxen blocks which I love, but I realize others hate) since the Seaways are permanently attached to the cars you would have to cut the block off to get a car to mount a different block (Harken, Ronstan, Oxen, etc.). The old Seaways are handy to keep as spares so destroying them for the cars doesn't entirely make sense if you are upgrading jib blocks.

Welcome to the Hobie world!

The 18 is a great boat. I have a 84 and I'm located in WNY also. Sailed a 16 for years and finally bought a 18 six years ago. It's a great boat with plenty of power and comfort. Where will you be sailing?

this is funny, as, when Googling "becket" with 1 "t" your question comes up on the search first. but, when spelling"beckett" with 2 "T's" it seems to be some sort of of "through hull" type of adapter that could be used to guide a line. this could be used to adjust the jib traveler from opposite side of the boat i guess. a line and block would be needed it seems. my 1978 18ft with original sails,rudders,boards,Etc, does not require this level of immediate adjustment. good ice in the cooler with a supply of adult canned beverage is a better upgrade for me. if anyone has a pic of this system to post, my curiosity is now tweaked.

Thanks all - that makes sense - that the becket adapter replaces the jib mechanism so 'el capitan' can adjust without having to climb down and pull the pin.

T-bone: I'm in Rochester. The boat came from Honeoye Lake and it's temporarily on Keuka where my parents have a place. I will be sailing mostly on Lake Ontario since sailing on Keuka is marginal, however, there is a guy south and across from my parents on Route 54 who has a shiny new Tiger, so i would like to go get schooled by him on occasion.

As luck would have it i, work with Fleet 295's Webmaster who also serves a role in the Lightouse Beach Cat Club. He has helped tremendously with many questions, loaned me books, etc.... He owns a ~88 H18 Manum and has invited me to sail with him. I plan on joining the club next season.

Where are you ?

I don't know what a becket adapter is :lol:
Don't put ports in the rear unless you need to get in there for repair
You can upgrade the downhaul when you see a need to use it while sailing, most set it and forget it
I have some black rudders that are plastic, its pretty obvious if the rudders are EPO's. The plastic rudders are ok but you will need to upgrade if you run the boat hard as they will flex.
Old style rudder system is great inland, read all the advice about adjusting them. I have used both styles and never had any issues with either but the new style kick up so much easier.

Looks like you and I will be doing much of the same upgrades this off season. I have the same style rudders as yours, older EPOs - black. There is a little bit of glass showing through but not too bad. There are some videos from Jeremy and Surf City Catamarans - here is one on the old style EPO repair:
