Mast angle questions...

I did search and found the answer but.... Matt M posted that when everything is rigged and ready, sheet in and there should be ~1 foot between boom blocks and traveler blocks. Q1 - Is it the same with my setup - i have three separate pulleys on the boom - i haven't upgraded yet ?

Q2 - what exactly should i upgrade to - a three pulley Harkin block ? I have seen many different ones for sale on Murrays - is there a best choice or does it depend on preference ?

Q3 - I think i had the mast raked too far forward. When i was sailing, if i sheeted the jib in too much it would make the boat want to turn downwind when i let go of the tiller. I was trying to get a feel for the boat - was my first sail - and i was alarmed with the negative weather helm - scary ! i thought it was sail trim but am thinking that i had the mast too far forward. Thoughts ? Opinions ?

Q4 - i noticed a missing screw on my jib block - screw is for adjusting angle of the block - in the Murrays catalog they have Harkin screws that look the same - are they ? They are small and fine pitch thread - like 10-32 or something - also have nylon (or some plastic) washer. My blocks are original Seaway(sp?).

First off, many factors need to be considered when adjusting mast rake. To adjust mast rake, first adjust rig tension to the desired tension. I use the "harder she blows the tighter she goes rule". Then measure up the front of the mast from the base up 4 feet and place a piece of tape to mark this measurement. Next , take a measurement from either one of the bow bridle tangs up to the tape on the mast. This distance should be between 105 1/4" to 106 3/4". More than 106 1/4" and you have too much rake. Less than 105 1/4" you have too little rake. To adjust rake, loosen the rig tension and move the forestay chainplate up in the furler assy. to increase rake and down to decrease rake, then retighten the rig and remeasure. Repeat as needed until desired rake is reached. Generally 105 7/8" is a good all around rake. This is real generalized info as I stated. Many factors such as wind, water conditions, and total crew weight factor into the many tuning adjustments available on the Hobie 18. Mast rake is just one of them. This will get you in the right ballpark to start off with then experiment with your boat as the factors change to find out what works best for you. Jim.

These are the stainless plates bolted to the bow... which the bridles are pinned to.
