Hi there, thanks in advance for your help. I'm currently a H16 sailor and am looking to upgrade to an 18 magnum.

I've read a few things about this reinforcement plate and am a bit confused about what this looks like or where it bolts. I'm looking to buy from a guy in our fleet (Fleet 2) and he doesn't know what I'm talking about and neither do any of the other old hobie sages in our fleet that I have spoken to.

Any tips, or pictures would be awesome.

Thanks,

Adam

Adam,

On the Hobie Cat Company site from the front page,
go to "Products"
then from the dropdown menu, find Sailing products, then on that dropdown menu, put the cursor on Parts and accessories.
Double click on that
then on the next page that pops up, click on "Parts Diagrams"
then click on Hobie 18/SX18.pdf
on that page is a blowup picture of a Hobie 18 hull and some of the attached pieces.
Look @ "Anchor Plate Kit" part Number 64100001.
I believe they sell them in sets of two.
The newer hulls have 3 sets on them one where the shroud goes thru the lip
and then both inner and outer where the front crossbar thrubolts.

Hope that helps.
If not, find one of the H-18 guys in your group, Denny Osburn, or Chris Jernigan,
They will know exactly what you are looking for.
OR
Give Jeremy @ Surf City Sailing a call. HE probably has them on the shelf ready to ship.

Stephen

So correct me if I'm wrong. These plates should be on the outside of the hulls and where the shrouds, and crossbar through bolts go?

I don't think this boat has any of these and has wings. Is this something that you would walk away from and keep looking, or if there aren't any cracks would you just install them and hope that there aren't any unseen issues.

Also if anyone had actual pictures I would really appreciate it.

Thanks so much,

Adam

Hi Dude, adding to Stephen's post, this picture might help as well. Please refer to the metal "cowboy stirrup"-looking brace screwed in to the hull directly below the front cross bar (right/adjacent of the crack). FYI, the old '82 boat I purchased last fall already had these installed at the shroud anchor pins (stock setup? I'm not sure) but NOT at the cross bars. In reading through the posts on this board, I believe the vets are recommending that you add them to the front cross bars as well.

IMO; Anchor Plates should be both inside and outside of hull on front crossbar. At the shroud anchors and at the outside of the rear crossbeam. Especially if you have wings. Wings put an enormous amount of stress on the hulls, and any wave action will amplify that stress. Look up the FAQ about the extra fiberglass patching at the front crossbar attachment area.

Use bolts instead of pins for a stiffer wing fitting. Well worth the few extra minutes of set-up.

Bullet proof the boat and go have fun on the 18. The wings give you a whole different perspective on catamaran sailing.

I have the same questions about the anchor plates is there any way Matt or someone at Hobie could collect the best info on this topic and add it to the FAQ page since it seems many people are asking about this.

Floyd,

Please go to the thread on this forum currently on pg2 "The Big Project:H18 Repair" .... read all the posts ... most of your questions will be answered w/ pics also ..... Mr Tad Jones did a OUTSTANDING and EXCELLENT job on repairing his H18 and documenting/posting the steps here on the H18/H18SX forum.

He worked w/ Jeremy from "Surf City" ......

Enjoy
