I too take exception to the racer vs amateur unless all racers are paid. I think a rewording is in order. Why not keep it - racer vs recreational sailor? :?:

I did, it started with amateur, but changed it to recreational after the fact.

I don't think I'd be the best racer :P

That's what I thought before our first regatta...not saying I was better than anyone else...but I felt like I barely knew how to make the boat go fast...our first regatta was like the fourth or fifth outing with the boat. We got a general overview of the important rules and a "just follow me..." Honestly, racing had an exponential effect on our recreational sailing experience. And being at the lake for a weekend with a bunch of people who like to sail the same boat as me, as fast as possible, was a blast (FUN!).

I'm going to the lake sailing anyway, right?
Maybe a few hours more, so a few $'s more in gas.
Pay for camping? OK, that's a wash.
Food? Gotta eat right? Hey, someone else is going to cook dinner, and provide coffee every morning, water, etc. (Just BYOB) +1
Entry cost may also include a couple of t-shirts as a momento. +1
Give-aways or raffles for cool sailing stuff. +1
Free rigging or sailing tips from racers happy to see YOU show up???
Priceless

No, racing is not going to end. There are many experienced vets.
The 16 is also among the least expensive boats with a strong racing class which should keep it alive for a while longer.

I'm with Rich, a recreational racer. These days I'm using the regattas as my fun sailing and killing two birds with one stone. Also, racing has improved my sailing skills considerably.

I like to attend some regattas just for fun and I like to travel too,but I am OK with just spending a weekend solo sailing my 21SE.I have a very nice 16 that I only use a couple of times a years if that often. I guess it would be a more regatta class boat to haul around but it isn't really all that much more hassle to set up and sail my 21SE with crew or not...Bill 404 21SE

Even though Hobie is now a Kayak company, who also happens to build a few fiberglass boats...

I would be disappointed if Hobie characterized themselves that way. Just saying that kayaks are very popular.
