I was just offshore the other day when a few dolphins came by. They seemed oblivious to the kayak -- I wondered if I was going to collide with one of them.
Image

After passing by, they just kept moving without any pause or deviation.

Yesterday in the back reaches of Mission Bay (San Diego) there was another group. It's rather unusual to see dolphins in that bay since it's a man made, relatively shallow body of water. Anyway, they seemed a bit more interested in the Hobie and ran along side for a few minutes before going about their other business (probably fishing). It was hard to get good pics since one never knew where they would pop up next and the shutter lag on the camera wasn't quite quick enough for the action. Nevertheless, it was a rare treat to play with them.

Earlier in the morning I ran across a women's rowing event called the Fall Classic and had a front row seat for most of the race. Those 55 ft. shells are as sleek as they are fast!

It's always good to have your camera a quick grasp away -- you never know what may show up! 8)

See dolphin every day. Still looking for the women's rowing team.

Ok, I live on Lake Ontario... I don't get to see dolphins... EVER! Funny thing is, I also live about 5 minutes from the training area for some of the country's best rowing teams... so, ironically, I could see rowing teams anytime I wanted... men's or women's.

Trust me, the dolphins are still cooler! 8)

Thanks for the pics Roadrunner! 8)
Is that still your original cam column repaired Adventure and were you actually keeping up with that rowing team? :o
I know what you mean about dolphins being difficult to photograph.
I've found the best way to overcome shutter lag is to set to multiple shot mode..... or video. :)

Kayaks provide an unobtrusive unique view of life, much better than the view of a TV from the couch. I tried to keep up with a local high school Crew in my outback.....not for long though....I should have known better...I crewed in High School and college...duh :D

Fortunately, due to the zig-zag race course (and their measured pace over a few kilometers), I was able to take some shortcuts and follow the race from start to finish with the Adventure. I definitely had to move smartly to keep up though! This was a timed race launched at short intervals due to course width constraints. The earlier picture was about mid-course; here's an entry about to start:
Image

Here they are arriving at one of the boathouses after the race a few miles away:

The Outriggers are considerably slower and it is possible to sprint up to them for a quick close-up:

Coincidentally we ran across the same boat in the Bay 2 Bay race this year near the finish (they were on the 20 mile race and we were on the 5 mile race with a TA). In this uneven scenario, the TA was able to keep pace with thie particular outrigger for the final 1/2 mile, both boats sprinting across the finish line dead even.

Yes, you guys are getting some great shots that way. This video still of you sailing with Neptune's wind is my all time favorite!

No, it finally gave up the ghost last year. The repairs added about 1500 miles to its lifespan though, so I was thoroughly impressed with the epoxy. The current '10 with Click N Go has been fantastic, with over 700 problem free miles so far and running great. :D

Thanks for that Roadrunner.
.... and thanks to Chrisj who noticed the 'Neptune' cloud shape in the video. The newer HD video cameras with progressive scan make it easy to grab a good quality still. So much better than the interlaced 2 half frames of the previous DV format.
Must have been hard to give up on the old cam adventure. I agree the new CnG and V2 drives are a huge improvement and are proving very reliable. It's great to see Hobie continually refining their product! 8)
