It would appear that the scupper hole is the issue here, not the cart, which did not fail, (though it often does).

By far, most of the force is placed on the scupper bottom, so the rips on top make me scratch my head.

I would agree, and I think that Hobie would, there is a tolerance issue with these holes, and that they are being asked to handle stresses with the AI and TI that they were not originally designed for.

They need to be beefed up, or an insert designed to protect them while carting the big boats. Problem is, they are 1" ID and just fit the 1" cart tubes. There is little to no room for an insert unless it's thin stainless.

Improving the mold is the real answer, and that may be harder than it sounds.

Cracks suck. But cracks in the bottom suck faster.

Chris,
The C-Tug cradles are flat and stiff and don't bend like roofrack cradles to conform to the curved/indented TI hull. Though the cradles angle adjusts it still leaves an unevenly supported hull that will dent if left on long enough. I do like the C-Tug. It is cleverly designed and very strong. Some sort of hull shaped cradle is needed such as Slaughter's custom cradle he made for his cart. What would work very well is the Hobie trailer cradle mounted to the C-Tug. Expensive solution though!

Just like this Chris?

We recently had a week at Winda Woppa and this was my launching spot. Getting the TI and AI down the sandhill was a one man job. Getting it back up required a few extra hands but there was plenty of family to help.
We had no problems at all. I also wheeled the fully rigged TI along the road for about a kilometre a few times when retrieving from the river.

I'm with Nohuhu here. The cracks at the top of the scupper are unusual. :?

Stringy,

Nice sailing site. I have never had such a hard launch; although I have my family to sail with me, I pull it by my self. I it is only me I always pull everything off before I take it in and out of the water. I am only ever just pulling the main hull.

I am taking it to my dealer tomorrow. I am on 5 weeks holiday and all I want is my TI. Luck that Melbourne's weather is predicted to be poor for the next 4 days.

Lets see what happens. Will keep you all posted.

   Stringy, that beachhead is insane!

We tried one a bit smaller than that, with a 2 loaded AIs and 2 beefy guys, and it kicked our okoles. The old Hobie Trax balloon tyres were useless. The boats kept sliding back down too.

I nearly had a cardiac arrest.

And then you walk it a mile?? You Aussies are so hardy! You probably just let the Sheilas do it, right?

NOHUHU,

The 1mile back is no problem, the 50degree sand bank would kill me!

Just an update on my TI (RIP :( )

I took it back to my local dealer and he was great. He just swapped it over with a new hull. I was lucky that he had a red TI hull just waiting for me to pick up.

Thanks to my local dealer and to Hobie!

Great outcome Paul67. :)
Very quickly resolved with no mucking around

I'd like to know who the dealer is.

It sure isn't the one that sold me an incomplete AI 3 weeks ago and abused me for trying to ascertain when I might expect to get the parts :o

Even went as far as to say he would prefer to take it back and sell it to someone else rather that have me make derogatory and (in his opinion) untruthful statements about his poor service. :o

Fortunately this is not the experience I have had with all the other dealers I have done business with. I should have never given him a second chance as the same dealer had taken 5 weeks to respond to a warranty claim earlier this year.

Mickey,

There are not that many dealers around Melbourne (work it out!)

I guess depending on which side of Melbourne you live - Mornington or Geelong could be your dealer.

Paul,
That is great news. 8)
Did your dealer determine the cause of the cracks? Was it a rotomolding defect?
BTW (and Nohuhu note) it wasn't 1 mile back after the sandhill! That would be pushing it!
It was only 100 METRES back to the house. The 1KM (return) was an alternative launch site.
The sandhill wasn't too difficult. As I said, I had no shortage of helpers (and yes Nohuhu some were sheilas!)
Image
We found the best method was to position 2 people at the top of the sandhill who would pull on a rope attached to the bow padeye. A couple of others would push the TI up as well. It was actually easier than I anticipated. The Trax2 balloon tyres worked remarkably well! They are so much better than the old Trax1. :)

FYI I have just returned from the local freight depot where I finally picked up all missing parts :D :D :D
A quick look at the akas confirmed that they are anodised :D :D
Now to get out and christen my baby :!:

Great outcome Paul. You couldn't ask for anything more.

While at times I question the quality of the Hobie TI, at least their customer service is excellent if things do go wrong.

I hope I get the same outcome on my AKA issues.

Sorry,

I am more of the Mornington side. He look at it and said I will swap it over. He could not have been better. Great dealer to deal with from trying out the AI (TI was not available at that time).

Mickey,

Hope you have a great time with your baby 8)

Glad you have a smile back on your face Paul. We were all feeling for you mate.
One of the reasons I added this profiled rubber to the cross bar of my cart was that I just didn't like the way that the full weight of the AI was sitting on a flimsy padded bar. Not that the bar would break but there just looks like there is too much movement between cart and hull. At least this does reduce most of the movement.
