large rudder questions

If I install the large rudder on my 2010 Outback 1. Will it turn better at low speeds? 2. Will it make the steering even more sensitive at high speeds (have to keep adjusting your steering to go straight)? 3. Does it slow the kayak because of more resistance while traveling straight? I'm wanting to upgrade to the ST or ST turbo fins and was going to upgrade the rudder at the same time if ya'll think it is worth it.

The sailing rudder is a necessity on the larger boats like the Revo or Adventure.
1) Yes
2) Not noticeable to me
3) Unlikely. Consider the entire surface area of your kayak and standard rudder. Add a few more sq. inches and your not talking much. Go with the Turbos. You won't regret it.

Upgraded my rudder and fins (Turbo's) on my Adventure. Both made a big difference.

On my Outback I just upgraded the fins to the St's and did not upgrade the rudder. Don't think it is necessary.

I'm right 98% of the time. The other 3% I don't worry about.

I upgraded my 2010 Outback with the turbo fins and sailing rudder after I found while using my down rigger the kayak wanted to "pull" to the side the down rigger was deployed.
The increased surface area of the sailing rudder counteracted the drag of the down rigger.....now I can track "straight"......it also makes turning/course changes quicker.
The turbo fins allow much less effort to move the Outback......both improvements are worth the small $$ investment in my view.

Upgraded both the rudder and fins on our Outback; the difference was so great that I don't know why they don't come standard with it.

Went to Lewis and Clark yesterday and bought turbo fins and the sailing rudder. They are installed waiting on the alarm clock to buzz in the morning. I'm headed for Beaver Lake in the am to jerk the lips off some crappie. I just hope I can find some water. I'm not setup for ice fishing. A lot of the lake if frozen over.

Hobie must not think so.

It seems strange that an item of necessity isn't included with the purchase.

It reminds me of how new HD televisions don't include an HDMI cable, an equally frustrating situation.

The smaller kayaks DO NOT require a larger rudder. We have included a size-appropriate rudder on all models. If you want to sail... that is a different issue. Not all people want to have the weight and draft issues of the larger version. It's personal preference once beyond the initial setup we designed.

I bought a large rudder when buying the Adventure but never installed it. The original rudder turned the kayak surprising well.

The answers IMO are:

Yes, Yes and No.

Yes the kayak turns tighter at slow speed and at high speed. I have two revolutions and I have the sailing rudder on mine with Turbo Fins. Wife has the factory rudder and she turns just fine for simply cruising around. I just upgraded her to ST fins just for better speed so I don't have to crawl along with her with my Turbos. I do not want to put her into Turbos yet.

For fishing .. the fast response and tight turning radius with the sailing rudder really helps when trolling and you hook a fish and need to swing around quickly or a fish runs under your boat. Under a clip the A**end will really swing about. The sailing rudder would add maneuverability to any model Hobie.
