Hi,

That's why I asked Matt if he could locate a pic of a H18 Mainsheet Stack from 78'-80'ish. I'm 99% confident that when I got my H18SE in 1984-85' that it came w/ a 6X1 Seaway Mainsheet Stack ... and I payed extra for the 7X1 Harkin "Big Block" upgrade.

The H16's went to the 6X1 Mainsheet Stack using Triple blocks top and bottom since the H16 likes to be sailed upwind sheeted "Block to Block" to increase the mast angle ===> moving the "center of effort" aft on the boat ===> more loading on the rudders blades ===> better pointing ....

The H18 w/ dagger boards doesn't need that much "loading" on the rudder blades to point going upwind .... that's why the H18 doesn't need as much "Mast Rake" ......

From a guy that has been buying and sailing H-18's since the dead sea was only sick, I can tell you for sure that the original setup on Hobie 18's was a triple on top of a single.

Back then, the "hot shot's" changed the three singles on the boom to a single triple, hung from the center becket.

The Double on top of a single was the original equipment on the older H-16's.

I quess my memory is incorrect .... and I'm confusing the mainsheet stack on my first boat , a origonal H16 (1974?) with the origonal H18 set-up. Both used Seaways ......

.... I quess these grey hairs on my head are starting to effecting my memory .....

Thanks Stephen

I have a "Lewmar" set-up and a Harkin "Big Block" set-up like that in the pic .... Lewmar=Class Racing ... Harkin=Magnum Sailing since the mainsheet lengths are different and the camcleat angles needed are different ...

The major difference is that my "single" block on the bottom is turned sideways/across the triple ... this allows me to thread/weave the mainsheet slight different .....

I like Yale "Conception" 5/16" (which runs slightly large) ... very light, soft, easy to handle ... doesn't absorb water ... it's a Marfoli "clone"..... (I usually sail w/o gloves on small boats .... on large boats (43' Tri) .... just do a spin drop one time w/o gloves ... smell the skin ..... I won't do that again !!!!!!)

The NE Salsa line is light & easy on the hands and also doesnt really absorb water. My fear is that because its light it will stick (not uncleat) when the sail is loaded this fear comes from my N5.5sl the boomless sail would load hard and I would have trouble getting it to uncleat it caused me to flip a few times. You can call me a whimp but I dont like to hold the sheet load I enjoy cleating my main sail and trying to steer out of gust when sailing but I want to pop my line and have it uncleat in that 5% when I cannot steer out of trouble.

You'll like the Samson then better .... the NE Salsa, Yale Conception and Marfoli Swiftcord take some getting used to since it takes a little technic to snap it out of the camcleat .... (I do use my "cleats" alot ... and had to learn how to "whip"/snap the line .... you can call me "Indiana Jones" ....)

In my case I sail alot in light airs ===> I want to reduce the wieght hanging on the sail .... this is particulary true w/ the jib or a spinnacker .... more so then w/ the mainsail ....

It seems my west marine mainly carries New England line do they make something that compares to the Samson Trophy line?

Short answer - no.

Try APS - here's the direct link to the Trophy Braid - http://www.apsltd.com/c-1504-trophy-braid-samson.aspx

Called my local Hobie dealer and they are ordering it direct from Hobie for $0.98 a foot for 5/16 $50 for line stings but I loved the line on my H16.
