Hobie Brand Gel Coat

Can anyone tell me whether the gel coat sold by Hobie, part #HC 8005611, has wax in it or not, or in other words, will it cure till it's tacky or will it harden? Does it come with catalyst? Is it thin enough to spray right out of the cocntainer or will I need to buy some styrene to thin it down? Does anyone else have any recommendations as to what additives I'd need to purchase to use this product? My immediate project is to put a coat of gel on my the bottoms of my H20 where it's getting a little thin.

Matt M. can answer definitively, but I can probably answer most of your questions.

Comes with catalyst (if not, you can get catalyst at a hardware store)
Does not cure completely when exposed to air - you need to add a surfacing agent (Duratec Polyester High Gloss Additive is the shiz - http://www.duratec1.com/dp07.html) or spray with PVA
Is not thin enough to spray - you'll need styrene or some other thinning agent (acetone is not OK - leaves a porous, orange-peel surface - Duratec also makes a thinning agent)

Mix a practice batch and try it out on cardboard before you shoot on your hulls.

I read Rick Buchanon's article in the July/August 08 Hotline about spraying gel coat. It said that Duratec shouldn't be poured, but injected into the gel. What happens if you pour? I'll be mixing about a pint and a half for my finish coat, looks like a lot of shots with a shringe. I'm just spraying a 6 inch wide strip down my keels. My plan is to shoot the first coat without the Duratec, let cure tacky, then spray a coat with the Duratec and follow with PVA. How does that sound to you?

By the way, one of our fleet members sent me a few larger 2MB photos, all of the same boat. I'm hoping to hear back from more of our guys in the next day or two.

It's just messy, and the stuff is expensive, so you don't want to waste it.

Depends on the syringe - you can get the WEST System #807 syringe that holds 0.5 fluid ounces, or this bad boy:

It's a 100 cc syringe you can order off Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/Ecoplus-Syringe-1 ... _sim_hpc_2). Only 5 shots per pint.

Sounds like a plan. Wait until the second cost starts to cure before you shoot the PVA.

We can not ship catalyst, so has to be sourced locally as suggested by Mr. Bounds.
