hi all,
i own a 1991 hobie 18 formula LE, made in France, boat named - WINDSHAGGER.
after a long search for wings i finally gave up and decided to make my own.
my decision was based on the availability and cost of wings i found on ebay and classifieds. All wings i managed to find were in USA, and the cheapest shipping quote i got was from TNT, and in range of $300 (i live in croatia, the adriatic sea). since the price for used wings is somewhere around $500-$900, im quite certain for that money i'll be able to make wings of equal quality, made by order.
i browsed through all forums available on internet (except those in french-the language barrier), and must admit, this forum was the best source of information.
my issue is related to choosing a model of wings for my pride and joy. from what i gathered, magnum wings seem a lot easier to build, and have less supporting area at the wing-ends. looks durable and simple
on the other hand, i sailed a cat with SX wings, and i was amazed. the SX wings were at least foot longer (correct me if im wrong) at both sides when compared to magnum. but, from constructors point of view, SX model is more complicated, needs more welding, tension and forces are a bit different, and there is at least one more support point when compared to magnum model.
i already contacted some of the forum members who have open topics on the wings issue. the only problem is that i do not have the exact measures for any wing make - i do have very good pictures of magnum model (and it should b good enough) that i managed to download from dan from australia (member of this forum). and im eternally grateful for that dan. there is a slight possibility that i get pdf from dan with all measures, which would b great. but even without the general measures, im fairly certain very good wing job could b done just with pictures.
but.. i couldnt find any decent photos of SX model. and now im determined to find out which wing model should i go for
please, help me out. what i need is:
a) good advice or just an opinion on SX vs MAGNUM wings model
b) detailed pictures of SX wings
c) measures of SX and MAGNUM wings
bear in mind that any advice or opinion is precious to me in this situation. i will go for it, no matter what. and with your help, or without it, i WILL make the outcome posted on this forum. with videos, measures used and detailed photos.
to be honest, i cant believe that no body had done this b4 (build their own wings, and let us know how it went; cmon - there has got to be at least 100 of them made in do-it-your-self or similar method worldwide). so, if im to be the first one, so be it. by the look of it, not a piece of cake to build, but not cold fusion either.
