I currently have the 80's diaper style harness and I need to purchase another for my crew/myself when solo. Im looking at the hobie skipper, convertable or gul stokes.

I plan on sailing in the ocean solo and being out on the wire all day, will I be comfortable in the skipper harness for a long duration? Is the back support necassary for 30 year old in good physical shape? Also, are the Hobie harnesses the crotchless design? I'm leaning towards the convertable..

I like my full harness,Black Magic. It is very comfortable and gives great back support.I can wear it without feeling "pinched"
I like going to different catamaran stores and see their inventory. You will find many choices online.Go for the more expense one as you will more than likely get what you pay for.

An old farmer that I hangout with sometimes told me more than once,
"Whatever hobbies you embrace, will cost you more than you expected. If you can't afford all the horns and whistle, you will not be happy."

My older Murray Marine half harnesses have that "Rainbow" color scheme across the back...not really a color scheme I want to wear...and they do "pinch" in a uncomfortable way .They are OK for a thin girl to wear but not comfortable for the guys.
The long spreader bar is what I like for comfort and support.
If you wear a wet suit or dry suit with fleece undergarment ,you will need one sized to fit over everything.Buy one large effort to wear year round.
Good luck,Bill 404 21SE

After years of using a Murray's 'full' harness, with spreader bar, I picked up a Hobie Skipper's harness...best I've ever worn.
Some folks on the Forum love their Zhik....Not cheap.
Why don't you go to a dealer, and try the Hobie...it works.

I just bought a Magic Marine harness. Very comfortable. It replaced a full Hobie harness that I was happy with, the non-skid on my boat is very aggressive and was ripping the butt out of it.

I was going to get a Zhik, but I prefer the crotchless style.

Yup, some of the keeners at our club love their Magic Marine...Alan the Tiger sailor, and Steve the 29'er and some other folks. Find what works for you, like Karl did.

And after years of struggling with the 'ancient' style of Hobie lace up harnesses, crotchless is the way to go.

I just purchased a 2010 Dakine Fusion seat harness for $99 (the 2011 version retails for $199). The harness came highly recommended from a Cat sailing friend and I really liked the fit and support. Along with the harness I purchased Dakine's 12" hammerhead spreader bar (I'm XL so they recommended the longer bar) and spreader bar pad, the later of which comes with a convenient velcro pocket for the supplied kite knife....
