Hobie 16 for sale

Hey, I'm new to the Hobie community, but have always had fun sailing with friends in the past. I finally talked my wife into getting a Hobie and unfortunately was sold a boat (off craigslist of course) that is missing the blocks and has a soft spot on 1 pontoon between the trampoline posts. I talked to the guy right after I brought it home and the rain stopped and he pretty told me he didn't care that he sold me a pile of crap.

ANYWAYS......Was told it would be cheaper and easier to get another than fix....so I have a some parts for sale.... Sails are in excellent shape as well as the jib. mast is very solid and boom is good. Trampoline is new and the rails and rudders are in good shape. Unfortunately, as well as hearing the 'I told you so" from my wife, I'm out the $$ from a guy who really ripped me off and saw me coming. Oh Well...I'll learn.

I assume it is better to just start over and consider it a loss than try and put the money into buying another hull and getting new blocks...

Sorry about the fact you got taken by some (choice word) out there. I got lucky last year when I bought my H14T since it was in great shape. This year before I bought my H16 I went through the forums on here several times looking for all the advice I could find and I am glad I did as it kept me away from 3 problem childs prior to finding my newbie. If you have the room to keep some spare parts around you may want to hang on to it until you get another one so you can make a great boat out of two good or OKs. If you are set on parting it out though I would either post pictures of individual parts or have them ready to email at least.

One soft spot between the pylon's and missing blocks and you want to give up on the boat? Does not sound like too bad a problem. Dozens of articles on how to fix soft spots effectively on this site and internet in general. (see Hobie Hotline past issues) Set of blocks can be had from ebay anyday. Stirkes me if these are your only problems with the boat it could be much much worse. Stuffs gonna break anyway. Pause, reflect and consider fixing it.

I agree, one soft spot between the pylons is not the end of the world, especially if it's not too big. Soft spots in front of the foward pylon are the real trouble spots.

Sounds like you need to educate yourself a little more on what you did/plan to purchase. I'd have a hard time putting a lot of blame on the seller unless he did something along the lines of putting a gun to your head and forcing you to buy the boat.

In any case, you should probably take your new purchase to someone who really knows what they're looking at like an experienced Hobie sailor or dealer and get their input before you just start ripping the thing apart and selling the pieces. From the sound of it, a couple bucks worth of epoxy and a set of blocks and you could be on the water.

Do you still have the sails, both main and jib? If so could you put some pictures up so I can see the condition of the sails? We have a 16 and need new sails and if yours are in good condition and reasonably priced that would be great. Also what price are you asking for the sails? Last of all I am located in Northern Michigan so if you are not close to this location would you be willing to ship?

I agree with the other posts.It's repairable.
Hell, I have an original set of jib blocks from an '82 16 that you can have for free.

The benifit to these boats is anything can be fixed, I've even seen Single hulls for sale, There is a post on here somewhere and there are Pictures of a guy that completely restored a real beater and the thing looks like New, also you said the sails the mast and the boom are in good shape so that's a huge start, even if you decide to buy another boat I suggest keeping the sails, you could get another solid boat and then realize you need new sails and that can easily set you back $1000 or just have a bad day on the water and capsize and put something including yourself through the main, or like I did when I capsized and the current took the mast right up to a bouy with barnicales on it as I watched in horror

Plus if you fix your 16 you will appreciate it so much more, and any boater will tell you they have more into their boat then they could sell it for but we don't put money into them for resale value we do it so we can scream across the water

.....forgot to mention that I also have the original Seagate mainsheet blocks.No charge.

thanks for all of the replies. Yeah I did jump a little impetuously into it, but have begun the repair work this weekend. sanded off the old paint, will begin to prep it for delam repair this week. Don't read me wrong I'm not looking for a pity party, just a little pissed that I was lied to...my fault though - you're right I should have known better. Its a good boat, just the soft spots (which I am happy to fix).
