I am putting in the missing bungie line for the outhaul car. The roller "nubs" are in good shape - just a little dirty. Is there anything you lube the channel with to help the car travel smoother?

Thank you!

Dry silicone maybe? There should be little or no load when making adjustments, so should not require much lubrication. Never did when I was sailing 18s.

If the stainless car carrier isn't nice and straight (think hard jibe) sometimes this can cause it to bind.

Roller nubbs are just dirty ..... ?????

It's amazing how "a little dirt" will bind things up .....

Those Nylon rollers are cheap .... just replace them .... wash and clean the inside of the boom/outhaul track ..... (I would use a good stiff nylon brush/scrubby pad w/ soap&water to scrub the track ..... you could first use a solvent cleaner first like paint thinner, isopropal alcohol to clean the outhaul track ... this would be to remove any old petrolem based lubricants, but most-likely this use of "solvents" would be a un-neccessary extra step .... but it can't hurt .... it's just a little extra time .... )

Then follow Mr Matt Miller's advice ..... about using a "dry lubricant" ......

.... remember some petrolem lubricants don't work well w/ nylon since they re-act to each other ..... and they just attract/retain dirt .....

Thanks all. I ll follow up with all these and use some dry silicone. Looks like a cleaning is in order.

Karf, yes it is the Outhaul Assembly shown on that page.

Got it. Turns out most of the drag was coming from the tilted sheave on the outhaul car and the gap between the frame of the car and sheave had somehow compressed - binding my 3/16" line. I was able to reshape the opening and make it work.

Since my boat never had an Outhaul Shock Cord I was not sure how it was to be threaded. So I put a stopper knot in one end threaded it through the opening in the rear outhaul cleat clamp. Then ran the line aft and through the front hole of the outhaul car then forward through the other side of the outhaul cleat clamp. I tied off the line so that there was slight tension on the shock cord when the car was in its full forward position - which I assume is at the full extension of the 7' Outhaul line.

See the "Jr Jam Cleat" for the outhaul in the middle of the boom? It is held on by two SS Machine Screws that thread into a "clamp" (p/n 61711000) .... (from my Hobie H18/H18SX parts catalog). There are two "clamps" per "Jr Jam Cleat" .... one for each Machine Screw ...

Now the "clamp" looks like a fiqure eight w/ a threaded insert at the cross-over point for the machine screw to thread into ....

(Now this is were you will need a pair of "hemostats" or a pair of very thin needlenose pliers ...)

You install a length of bungie cord through one side of fiqure eight of the aft clamp (w/ a stopper knot on the forward side ...) ... now run that back to the "outhaul car" through the hole in the forward side .... then run the bungie cord back forward to the aft clamp and pass it through the other side of the fiqure eight in the clamp and tie off .....

You may find that it is easier to buy new "clamps" w/ SS Machine screws .... remove the "Jr Jam Cleat" .... install the new bungie cord ..... re-assemble the complete "outhaul" system .... then reinstall into the boom ...

I've been able to thread the bungie through the "clamp" using Hemostats .... and then while holding the bungie in place, from the forward side reach down into the boom w/ the Hemostats pull out the bungie cord and make stopper knots (or knot the bungie together ...)

{Hint: tape the bungie ends w/ elec tape and trim for a "clean" end w/ a razorblade ......}

But this task can take a steady hand ... and patience .....

Thanks for the detail. I bought a new jam cleat for the outhaul and for the mast rotator. I have always only had two jam cleats on the boom. I see there are three in parts guide. The 2 aft cleats face the opposite direction from each other. No idea what the second one is for.

I do have two clamps per cleat. If looking at a cross section of the clamp as it sits in the boom there is a hole on each side of each clamp to feed the bungie through. I am assuming they are pn 61711000. They fit just right in the channel but they dont look like a figure 8. They do receive machine screws.

It is functioning now, but I am curious what the second rear jam cleat is for on the boom?

Well .... they're not exactly in the shape if a fiqure eight .... but it's the only way I could quickly discribe them ..... how about two (glazed) donuts side-by-side ....???

I'm not sure what the second Jr Jam Cleat is for ..... there is a system to over-rotate the mast for going downwind that could be what it is used for .... (but I would have to see pic's so I could determine if that's what it's for ..... my P19MX uses something like that ....)

Do you know what a "hand impact" is ??? I've found it to be very useful in "setting" the SS machine screws .... just a easy tap .... also very helpful in loosing the same SS machine screws ....

Thanks again! I only saw the second jam cleat in the Hobie 18 parts guide. Shows a total of three on the boom. That's all I have to go on.

The cleats have'nt been slipping -yet- so hand tight has been working ok. I must have something different for a clamp. It's nothing like an 8, a doughnut or even a pretzel. :D

All put together now and works great - no more shoving it around in lighter air - hopefully.

Thank you for your help.
