I tried my best a couple of weeks back and was able to get to and hold 6.2 knots for about 30 seconds peddling and paddling together in Adventure only mode. It is something I have practiced whenever in kayak mode to get the co-ordination together and now can measure it with my almost new Garmin 60csx.
Now 6.2 knots = 7.135 mph or 11.482 kph.
Can anyone beat that?...Pirate

Bob I am not sure if peddling/paddling is any advantage. That is what I am asking in a sense, but no good mate just saying you can beat it. You got to say what the gps figure honestly is. I found the exercise exhausting after a short time, but as I say, the max I could get it up to and hold it for 30 seconds was 6.2 knots...Pirate

I AM ON!

But I prefer have at least 1 km as the shortest distance.

My personel record is 32 minutes and 27 seconds for 5 km at very nice conditions.

If you prefer miles, just tell me!

Shall we go for the fastest one mile?

best regards from Sweden (very soon the the ice will vanish at my standard launching site)

One mile it is Thomas. I will get out on the AI this week I hope and give it my best. Lets say you have four weeks for participants to lodge their best times which will give everyone an weather window opportunity.
Anyone else in on this? ...Pirate

Pirate - maybe you should throw this challenge into the kayaking forum as well
I think it would be interesting to know the age of the competitors also
Good luck - look forward to learning the outcome

I guess there are two challenges here.
1. Fastest speed actually achieved ( for at least half a minute) during the run
2. Shortest time to complete the course.

Who'se up for it??.....Pirate

If I may make a suggestion, your runs should be an average of 2 (up and back) if there is any tide, wind or chop (to average out the effects). You should agree on whether to use a standing start or a flying start (faster).

I have a friend here who boosts his speed with a paddle quite successfully. It's not too hard to keep up with him though -- as long as I stay close

I'll ask him if he'd like to enter.

I believe Rynkster on the general forum also uses a paddle advantageously. Both use the straight Adventure (slightly faster). I'm not coordinated enough to handle both simultaneously.

PS I think there may be a slight advantage in fresh water over salt water.

I agree on your wise suggestion that an average of 2, is preferable if there is any vind, chop and tide.

I suggest flying start and also that we separate the 2 challenges into 2 different races.
The "1mile" and the "30secondBOOST".
That will give more spectacular results.
The "30secondBOOST" we measure the distance and calculate an average speed.
We use GPS.

I will use my standard kayak Adventure "Libellen" and turbofins. Probably just pedaling, I'm not coordinated enough either...

Just waiting for the ice to go away.

PS I think there may be a slight advantage in deep water over shallow water.

I know you are not talking about the same thing, but there is a thread on racing the Island here

I think a mile is a bit far... a Couple of 100m would probably be enough to achieve maximum warp-factor.

I reckon a mile would have a subtle effect on your subconscious making you 'pace yourself' for such a long-distance time-trial...

I was also wondering how accurate GPS speed measurements actually are?

There are a few places (local to me) that are used for kayak racing and are around 1.5km stretches of water that have 'traps' every 100m, so you can get a very accurate speed measurement.

Mike.

Mike has a point there...My original question was max speed attainable, not endurance which is what is being suggested now. Maybe we run two competitions.
1. Max speed maintained over 50 meters
2. Min time achieved paddling/peddling over 1 mile/kilometer/nautical mile..whatever.
To my knowledge Mike the GPS is very accurate though it could be prudent to use the Kilometers per hour calibration which will give us a larger scale.
Also maybe it should be witnessed by another AI/TI member to validate the result.
PS...I don't think any of you pussies will beat my 6.2 knots anyway..Pirate

That will be fine but I...

1. Suggest we go for 30 seconds and measure achived distance instead. That maybe will be a more accurate reading.

2. Suggest we go a 1km (will be a little shorter than 1 mile).

If anyone is interested in a longer race, just tell me what distance you prefer.

6,2 knots is respect!
But I will try. In your first post you said it was a 30 seconds run. Thus I think we can use that.
If we go for very short runs and let the power of our legs explode in Mirage drive, there is a risk we just crash our equipment.

Is this OK?
