Hobie 18 furler maintenance

I just bought a used hobie 18 furler assembly. Is ther any kind of regular maintenance needed. Should I try to greae the bearingsat all and if so with what. I saw a rebuild video on youtube but I was also looking for quick relube options. I moves pretty freely but not quite as smoothly as I expected. I tried to remove the spool but it does not want come off easily. The video looked like it should not be to hard to come off. I want to check for possible corrosion problems before I trust my mast to it.

I have another drum I might get the rebuild kit for later but other than rebuild what is good standard maintenance.

the only maintenance is to wash the furler out well with fresh water. Take it apart, make sure all the parts are OK and clean everything. you can use a dry lubricant if you want, but other than the rebuild kit, just keep it clean.

I serviced my Furler the other day. It takes about 4 minutes total. You will need to purchase from HC the two bushings (essential part). You can get the bearings from HC as well. For the trust bearing part, I went to the local bearing shop and purchased 3mm diameter stainless steel ball bearings (approx $ 3 total). Good recommendation is also to change the circlip at top of assembly for a new stainless steel one. Hope this helps

Thanks for the input. So some sailkote would be good for it sounds like. I was not sure as the one video of a rebuild I saw showed the use of some sort of grease on the bearing cage but said it was to help keep the bearings in place for while putting it back together.

What was the grease you used on the bearings and do you re-lube them?

Will sailkote work ok for them if I'm not replacing them?

where is the best place to get the spare parts clips and nylon parts?

What's the tool called you used on the clips? would Home Depot/Lowes/Harbor Frieght have one?

Get the whole rebuild kit from a Hobie dealer.

Just use a very light coat of grease, then wipe the excess with a rag. It just holds the bearings in place during the rebuild.

Yes, HD or any hardware store should have snap ring pliers or circlip pliers.
