The mast capture cable passes through the cleats and shackles. It helps to keep the mast in the cup when the rig is loose.

Matt,

I just bought a solo upright via Backyard. However the mast capture cable was not in the package. Can you tell / show me how it should look?

Thanks
Heribert

I'm still curious about how you recover once the boat is upright. How realistic is it that you'll be able to return the shroud to it's correct location once the boat is upright? Also I'm assuming that it's a quick pin connection, and per previous posts aren't quick pins on standing rigging a big no no?

I used to be a lightweight short guy. Now I am a fat short guy. I have used the system for over 25 years on a 16 and my current 17. It works really well, but like everything else, it takes practice.

Here's the trick to recovering once the boat is up right - remember that when you come up, the wind is lifting the sail from the side that has not been lengthened while the lengthened shroud will be slack on the leeward side. DO NOT let the boat come up with the lengthened shroud to windward. NO NO NO.

Sail easy on that tack while you re-connect the slack shroud on the leeward side of the boat.

I know, easier said than done, but it is do-able. With a crew it is easy.

Someone else said have the crew pull the shroud while you pin it.

In both cases - isn't this suppose to be a "SOLO" righting system. With a crew we'd not need any additional righting hardware.

I've just ordered 350 in parts and on the verge of ordering one of these. Trying to get more info. (Hobie cataloge SUCKS as far as info/descriptions - they'd sell more things if it actually showed/explained things". Anyway - how does the mast-keep go? are instructions with it? If so - can someone post them on here to show us?

I have difficulty getting aboard (figuratively) with any righting system that takes the boat out of sailing trim. The only time I capsize anymore is in big wind and big waves. The last thing I want to worry about once I get back aboard is getting the shrouds retightened. There is enough to do already in getting the sheets and sails trimmed And getting back to the beach. At 56 I'm usually good for only one capsize/trip.
