I am thinking of taking my 18 up to Grand Traverse Bay in Traverse City, MI. We are going to be camping with family at the Traverse City State park on the southern end of the bay over Labor Day.

Anyone familiar with the area? Satellite view looks like a good sandy beach - is this correct? How is the sailing in the Bay?

Thank you!

Try contacting the local Hobie dealer, Sailsport Marine.

Grand Traverse Bay is great for sailing. Generally good winds and protected by the peninsulas from the big Lake Michigan waves. I live and sail just to the west on Glen Lake and in Sleeping Bear Bay and both are also very good. Same goes for Crystal Lake near Frankfort. If you make the trip up here, you have to bring your Hobie.

You'll probably want to check with the Traverse City State Park about launching/storing your boat on the beach, but yes, it's very sandy and easy to launch from.

Thanks, I contacted Sailssport and got some good scouting info for the beach area.
