All the propulsive thrust on the Mirage Drive must transfer through the pedal crank pins to the drums via the adjustment holes. Here it is effectively tripled by the much closer proximity of the holes to the rotational axis of the Drums, placing a tremendous compression load on those holes. Even with the glass filled Nylon V-2 drums, heavy users can eventually elongate the holes.

After years of kicking around various reinforcement scenarios, Hobie has developed an effective way to mold Stainless Steel inserts into the drums in a way that distributes this point load throughout the larger area.

Here's what it looks like:

This accomplishes two things.

First, it makes it much harder to destroy a drum by not fully inserting the pedal adjustment pins. I have done this myself without realizing it until too late. Most embarrassing!

Second, these inserts should virtually eliminate wear on the adjustment holes. I have over 250 miles of solid pedaling on these "V-3" drums with no apparent wear on the holes so far. Although relatively still new, they show excellent long term promise!

The inserts have no effect on the operation or adjustment of the Drive, and are not particularly noticeable unless you look. Nevertheless, this represents a significant improvement IMO. I understand these drums are currently being used with the new Drives. Great Job Hobie! 8)

Sorry Roadrunner, but it just looks like plastic to me, does it sit in the recess ?
Where is the SS insert exactly?

Another great improvement Hobie. :)
Thanks for the update Roadrunner. 8)

ELM,
It looks like the SS is sandwiched between the glass reinforced nylon.

Thanks Stringy, I did wonder, but was not sure, then I thought it must fit in the recess, but strange it was not shown.

A great improvement in the picture! Stringy thanks for fixing it up. I should learn how to do that. 8)

Is the stainless steel a plate sandwiched into the drum?

Or, are these more like small steel bushings or rings?

Put another way, if I were hacksaw a cut between the holes would I hit any steel or just plastic?

Do these drums have new part numbers to distinguish them from the original "old" V2 drums?

TIA

In any event a pretty significant improvement.

Same part number...

One plate per drum with all the adjustment holes.

The part is inserted into the mold and then plastic is injected... becomes a molded-in feature.

Just curious, when did the new drums start being included on the '11 models? I purchased an '11 Oasis today and it doesn't have the ss insert.
Looks like it may have a manufacture date of Sept '10.

If anyone wants to upgrade...

if you have a V2 drive, the latest V2 Drums are 81173001 $17ea (USD 6/2011)

if you have an older drive, you will also need new chains and idler cable.

It might be worth noting that this appears to be the same part number as the non-stainless version. In the unlikely event that your dealer has old inventory, make sure to inform him that you want the stainless insert version or inspect it yourself -- it's not difficult to spot the difference. 8)

So basically, if I were to go in and ask to have my V1 drive upgraded I would get back my turbo fins/shafts, pedals/cranks, sprocket caps and that's about it, would that be right Matt?

All the parts to upgrade a V1 to a V2 are at least 1/2 the price of a new V2. I would keep the V1 drive as a spare, or sell it and just buy a V2 drive.
