I always like to have the choice of shaking the reef out of the the main if the wind dies down. If reefed properly like any sail the reefed sail cloth is not an issue.
My first choice to handle wind that is to much for boat and crew is to drop the jib. Roll it tight and stuff it under the straps as far forward on the tramp as possible; at this point you will have to take the jib halyard forward and attach it to the front chain plate and tension the rig.

How certain is it that the sail head will pull out of the comptip from a reef? I mean is it going to happen for sure in a blow, or is it just a possibility?

Thanks,
Roger
