$200 hobie 16

56kz2slow, my car is a stick shift neon and towing the trailer isn't an issue but I don't want to risk heavy wear to my clutch when pulling the boat out of the water. The clutch simply isn't large enough for that kind of stress.

As a qualified mechanic, I'd say that your car will cope just fine.

Clutches only wear out when they're being misused (By being ridden or dumped-out too quickly/hard).

The load of your 16 will be no worse than driving with the car full of people and a bit of luggage.

Just drive it accordingly and you shouldn't have any dramas at all!

Well??? Did you buy it? Seriously .. your car will tow it just fine. Have you towed a trailer much? Learning to back it will likely be your biggest challenge if you have little or no experience towing. If you are not going to buy it, let us know. I am sure someone here will.

heck you can pull your H16 with a bicycle to the nearest beach. don't need a ramp...beaches are great for launching. but you'll need a helping-hand (preferable an experienced helper) raising the mast.

...hope he's not broken down somewhere with a dead clutch.

Oh, I'm certainly not dead, I did buy the Hobie. I just haven't been on the forum in a while. I am currently trying to find replacement ropes for it because all the lines on the boat are shot. Obviously the ropes need to be strong, but is there a specific kind of rope that is needed for the rigging?

Well, mine cost $400 with the trailer and I'm still throwing money at it getting it to work fully. The point is that just because the initial price is low, doesn't mean that will be the final cost invested.

in the future I will be throwing more into it, it definitely needs a paint job on the hulls pretty soon, the trailer also needs some work. But for now I just want to get the new lines and make it sail-able, I will worry about the expensive stuff later.

Don't put paint on it, I just spend 10 hours cursing and sanding 3 layers of paint from previous owners in order to be able to do a bottom job and gelcoat the repaired area.

At the marine store I went to, a quart of gelcoat was cheaper than a quart of marine paint. And I don't need to gelcoat the entire boat, just the areas I repaired. The rest of the hulls are chalky, but I'll just go to town with a buffer and rubbing compound to bring them back to life.

you make a strong case, hmm, I am leaning towards just leaving the hulls the way they are. It really isn't vital that the hulls are painted, its just that they are faded and ugly, I wanted to change the color from white to add some flare to my Hobie. I just really hate to go out on public waters the way it is now and give everyone the impression that my Hobie is a piece of junk.

pyroboy08 - I'm glad you bought that boat & trailer. Sounds like you got a great deal. Everything appears to be in good condition except for those ropes, which you plan on replacing.
With summer approaching, this is not a good time to take on a major project. You're 16 yrs. old and school is out. It's time to go sailing.
If you're concerned about the appearance of your white hulls, do as 56kz2slow suggested and try using rubbing compound on them-either by hand or with a buffer. You could also try using wet/dry sandpaper. Then some Gel-gloss polish or wax. This would be an easy and fairly quick project.
If you want to add some flair to your hulls, apply some stripes/stickers to your hulls BEFORE you wax them.
Get some help sailing, find a local Fleet, locate a hobie Dealer, and Have A Great Summer.
