if you could choose between a 2010 and 2011 ai,which one would you not choose.its gonna be used in the summer and winter, meaning temperaturs down to 14 farhenheit assuming theres little to no ice, it could happen in perfect fishing world :D .i know they are fantastic, but i wanna know why you would not choose the one or other. they ar really expensive here in norway,so i wanna get the max out of them. i will of corse do proper maintenace. but they will have to withstand a lot of abuse.

I'd be going with the '11 if there wasn't too much of a price difference.
The '11 has the re-designed hull stern to accept the upgraded rudder. While not as essential on the AI as it was on the TI, the larger rudder and stronger pin are worthwhile. I'm still waiting for the upgraded rudder (no twist-n-stow) so I can't comment on it's benefit but others have given it the thumbs up!
The other major improvement over the '10 are the anodised and clip in aka. Anodising is welcome and long overdue. Time will tell whether the clip in aka is a worthwhile upgrade. They are easier to fit, though the original pin system wasn't much harder and it was very reliable. There are reports of problems with loose aka collars on the new system.

Hello Friend
If you wash off the salt soon after you use the boat (and spray a bit of silicone into the crossbars) you will have no problems. However at very low temperatures the plastic will stiffen up (I assume)
The 2011 (my own craft) has better ergonomics (imo)
Like anything human the latest model will usually always be more improved.
If I had a choice (which I did), I bought the 2011 model :D

Hi again

I live on the wet coast of Canada but I have had the pleasure to Ice sail in Alberta where it gets colder than a reindeer's nose with the flue, lol
Remember this boat was designed in California, where it if gets below 40 degrees patients start checking into the local hospital suffering from 'Cold' lmao (my bad)

Seriously, all it would take is a a skilled Aluminium welder to create 3 V shaped 'skates' and a few bungies and voila you have a killer Iceyak. :o

What do you think?

Regards Trinomite

OOpsies

If you are going to do that all the akas (and their connections to the amas) will have to be reinforced or sheit will hit the Fjord as the boat will come apart as it was never designed for this purpose.

Btw: I was in Oslo in 1975 to see the Kon Tiki. I was in awe (and still am)

Be well
Fred

I was left speechless after I spent a day in vigeland park.

Wow what an amazing achievement to humanity!

You live in an amazing country (as do I)

Be well

same goes for the rudder a skate would have to the replace the rudder...better you hope for a mild winter and no ice. I've crewed on 50' racing yachts, yet these minimal boats are a blast.

Personally, I think the more current model will most likely have the best improvements and would be my choice if I had one.
More importantly, they are both going to get you wet, just one maybe more than the other, so I would be asking; Which dry-suit should I get? The clothes you wear will decide when, where and how long will you use it, more than model changes between 2010 and 2011.

Seems from following some of the posts that some of the 2010 AI's have problem rudders etc. that the 2009 did not have. I would steer towards the latest and greatest if it was my choice. I am happy with my 2011 and am looking forward to the rudder upgrade though there is not a lot wrong with the rudder I presently have...Pirate

I think you misunderstood me: Not an Ice Crusher but what we call here an iceboat (or ice yacht). The skates are used to go from 12 knots to over 50 miles an hours skating over the ice.
A highly dangerous sport that I know the AI was never designed for, just letting my mind wander....(what if??)

Like this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b8KArtcP4o0&NR=1

Yet why not get an old SOT kayak hull and make a rear 'crossbar' and add skates to it. Add one high aspect ratio sail on a mast and add a 6 to 1 ratio pulley system. You will have to add a bow mounted rudder skate. (Yet it could be more fun than a barrel full of greased up naked humans) :o

Oh, Full face helmet is NOT an option!

Enjoy the videos, lefse!
Ha en fin kveld
Fred

lefse, got so caught up in memories of Ice boating in Alberta that I forgot your passion (Fly fishing)
Alas, once the lakes freeze up here, a fly is the last thing any fish will ever see here.
Yet you might want to use that killer 'new' ice boat to get you to the favorite fishing spot you used to use when the lake was liquid as you bring along this handy device:

and of course no Ice fishing would be complete with this:
