After doing a good bit of racing at the college level and a hand full of one design fleets i find myself wanting to move into hobie racing. I've gone through and made the changes to make the boat class legal, now i'm looking for a decent set of sails.

in my searching all ive been able to find used is garbage sails on ebay with the bidding just getting ridiculous for what they're actually buying.

so what i really what to know is are there sails just out their peak performance life and from this decade available? and what are they selling for?

If you really want performance, you are talking new sails... and if you are class racing, that means Hobie sails.

Hobie 16's are extremely common, however I would guess that you will not find anything real good on eBay. I would ask on forums like this and try to find a racers "second" sail set they are willing to sell... sails with good life left, but not blown out.

Also, without seeing them in person and rigged on a mast I think it will be difficult to really know the condition and shape of a used sail. Buying sigh unseen will carry some risk.

I would just start going to some races and talking to other sailors. Many A-fleet sailors will change out their sails every couple of years and you can pick up their old set at a good price. The other option is to call around to dealers. Tell them what you're looking for. They may have a decent used set in stock or know of a decent set somewhere, or they might have some leftover sails at a discount.

The fleet in Syracuse, NY (204) has a lot of top 16 sailors and they may have a "second string" set of sails available.

www.fleet204.com - post a note in their forum and see what happens.

Thank for the reply. A second hand set is exactly what I'm looking for. Matt thanks for the lead ill see what can find.

If I do decide to go with new, would you recomend new bartender too? Or would thirty year old ones work?
