I recently purchased a 2011 TI in dune. The dealer told me he swapped my rudder for the new one. It is the larger rudder, but has no bungee as shown in the leaflet inserted into my owner folder. Was the bungee attachment only for the "twisting" rudders? Or should my rudder have come/been installed w/one?

Also, when I was looking at online pics in the forum of the new rudder. There was a retaining bungee for when the rudder is in the up position. When I first got my TI the rudder did not move to-and-fro in transport, but now it does. Is this a indication it needs tightening or normal? And is this possibly why the picture I saw in the forum had the bungee around rudder in up position.

Thanks,
Travis

The new rudder does not use a bungee as shown for the earlier rudder system fix... not needed.

We do include the rudder-up strap and bungee to ensure the rudder does not drop while trailering or moving on a cart. There is also a up cleat, the strap and bungee is insurance.

The rudder may pull to one side when trailering.

I removed the old twist&stow deck bungee and replaced the two screw-in fittings with eye screw-ins.

My thinking is that if I ever loose the under deck steering lines I can set up emergency steering to the rudder cross-head with a loop of parachute cord from each side of the rudder to the cockpit. The screw-in loop acts as a guide...

I'm still waiting for the new rudder for my new TI. I just received my TI Cover and want to make sure that trailering with the new rudder sticking up will not create a wear problem on the cover. Please advise, thanks.

Seems you have to remove the new rudder and bungee it down or the cover won't fit.

I have the Hobie TI cover, it's very nice. Yes you have to remove the rudder pin and lay rudder on it's side before cover will fit. However this is not hard to do or even time consuming.
Just get some cotter pins and use those to hold rudder pin in place while sailing. They are cheap and do a good job of securing pin.
While rudder is loose I use the old bungee to hold it secure on stern deck while transporting.

You should not be trailering a boat with the cover on. You will just wear the materials faster and if the cover is loose or you drive too fast... you will damage the cover. They are not sold or presented as trailerable covers.

I just got the cover and it's really nice, a real bargain, couldn't make one nearly this nice for the money. I was looking at slitting the stern and adding velcro to avoid having to remove the rudder. Seems like an easy fix. The steering lines are too tight for easy, safe removal in my opinion. Hope the new covers include this feature.

I'm sorry I didn't know it's not to trailer the boat. I keep my TI inside so I only wanted the cover to allow me to leave pfd, rods, etc. in while trailering. Anyone need a cover?

The new rudder is great, much more powerful. I used the existing tiller controls and only replaced the up/down lines. Quick and easy install.

The new rudder is awesome!

On the cover, any chance it will accommodate the new rudder without having to remove it? That is, any thoughts on making the cover so that it covers the rudder in the up position?

I think cutting a slit in the aft section of the cover and putting a reinforcing stitch or some Velcro would work.

Thought about that.

I guess that is the way to go. I really would like to get the cover.

Understanding that Matt's word on the cover is the official one, I personally bought the cover with our TI for the express purpose of using it while trailering long distance -- and it suffered no damage. Here are the "before & after" photos from March.

Granted, at that point the TI still had its twist & stow rudder. I'll find it difficult to cut a hole in the cover so it will fit over the new rudder, so I may try the option of removing the rudder pin for our next long trip. We don't use the cover for short day-sailing hauls.

Glad to hear the cover trailers OK, that's why I bought one, too, for longer trips. I do a lot of sailing just a couple minutes away and wouldn't bother with a cover for that, but if I'm going more than 50-75 miles it would be nice to have it.

I'm still inclined to cut the slit for the new rudder, I'll let you know how it works out.

Fyi... these covers are not designed for towing. They are storage covers only.
