I just received my new Adventure. I bought the daggerboard for light sailing with the small sail. So far I've only had it on our backyard pond (100 yds) and I've found a couple of things:
• The daggerboard significantly stabilizes the rocking of the boat
• It seems to significantly improve the already astonishingly tight turning radius of the Adventure with the new steering system.
• On first test, I couldn't detect a reduction in speed or increase in effort, though I'm sure it's there somewhere, with the added drag.

Now I'm wondering what any of you have found about the usefulness of the daggerboard, if any, while kayaking the Adventure (not Adventure Island, and not sailing)?

In particular, I'm wondering if you think it would make the Adventure in any way more seaworthy in large seas. Would it improve steering enough to make it worthwhile using? Does it improve handling in large following seas, or help tracking in quartering seas etc.? Is the apparent stabilizing effect an advantage or a hindrance to preventing capsize in large waves? (Dedicated paddle kayakers speak of the inherent relative instability of their boats as an advantage, giving them the ability to lean into a wave and stay upright.)

The daggerboard definitely does stabilise the kayak. I often sail and sometimes forget to raise/remove it after dropping the sail (i.e. when fishing or when the wind has dropped). There is more drag when pedalling but the most noticeable effect is that the boat does not rock to the waves quite as well and I am not sure if this is a hindrance or a help - I think it depends on the sea state and the direction of the waves hitting the boat. Almost invariably if I find that I have forgotten to pull the dagger I will remove it ASAP because I would prefer to be without the drag than with the extra stability (the boat is quite stable enough without it when pedalling IMNSHO).

One thing I would say is that there can be little doubt that the dagger transforms the upwind sailing performance of the Adventure and makes the sailing experience every bit as interesting and engaging as a larger boat (personally I find sailing my kayak more interesting than sailing a larger boat because being so much more at the mercy of wind wave and tide the challenge and excitement is so much greater).

Don't forget to clip your daggerboard to the boat in case you or it goes over - mine sinks like a stone.
