UPDATES:

1. 2 Days ago I took a 1 hour sailing lesson with Performance Sail, and after 5 minutes of watching I got to take over and was hooked

2. Me (with 1 hour of sailing under my belt) and a friend (never even been on a sail boat) bought a boat last night, not great shape, but only $400
(Needs a tramp repair/replacement and has some small holes/tears in the newer sails)

3. Got it in the boat slip and are going to monitor it over the next few weeks to see how bad it gets before we take it out of the water and clean/fix it all up

4. Weather was perfect on the lake this afternoon prompting an immediate adventure .... and an adventure it was:

Cruising along with my friend on the rudder and me on the sheet:

Attempting to give a sailing lesson after only learning myself 2 days before

Us deciding to head in since we just got a huge tear in the sail (you can kinda see the yellow rope holding it together :) )

Overall it was amazing, we ripped our tramp a little larger and got a huge tear in the older sail(it was in pretty bad shape before), but who cares we got back ok, have a newer set of sails, and had a great time.

Sweet man glad to hear you're hooked. Let me know next time you go out and maybe we can meet up.

Wow, what a great outing for your first time - welcome to the madness!

What camera are you using? What is the mounting solution? Have you seen the videos of people having mounted their cameras to the top of the mast looking down?

Jman6631 - I hope this works. I used a GoPro camera and mounted it where the forestay connects to the 10 hole adjuster.
The pictures that coursevector took looks like he used the same camera - great quality; wide angle. It appears as though he mounted his on the tramp, by the mast.

PurdueZach,
Sounds good, we are going to try and get the small holes in the newer sail patched before we go back out. Any good place around to get that done?

Jman6631,
Richard is correct, its a go pro taking photos every few seconds and we had it attached to the jib cam cleat since we were only using the main sail. Haven't seen the top down, might need to try that.

Richard,
Nice video, we talked about mounting it up there, but were afraid of it bouncing around too much.
Does it just fit in the adjuster hole?

Next time we will bring a bigger card and get a bunch of videos too.

I would like to know this too. Anyone know of any good sail lofts in the the Melbourne area? I know Performance Sail and Sport shows on their website that they do sail repairs. And then there is also South Sails in Indian Harbor I believe.

Coursevector - Congratulations on your new [to you] boat. I hope you're able to get together on the water with PurdueZach. The learning curve is steeper when you get together with people who have more experience than you.
Mounting the GoPro camera...It's difficult to explain since I don't know the names or part numbers of all the Gopro attachments, so please try to visualize this:The top of the plastic case is attached to the 10 hole adjuster and the bottom is attached to the thimbles on both bridle wires. Now, the bottom must stick out further than the top because you want your camera to be mounted straight back [level] and not on an angle.
On the bottom of the waterproof case are two short straight GoPro connectors angled back. I attached a small shackle to the second straight connector and two small shackles to the one shackle. Those two shackles are then attached to the thimbles of both bridle wires. This supports most of the weight of the camera and case.
The top of the case has a black latch which helps to seal the case and make it waterproof. Only a VERY THIN WIRE can pass through that latch, so thread a thin wire through that latch and twist tie it to the 10 hole adjuster or whatever is most convenient for you.
My wife and I just returned from sailing. I took the camera, but didn't use it since it wasn't really that windy. But, the next time I mount the camera I'll pad the back of the case and use some thin tape to secure all connections. On that last video you'll hear the wind, the water, and some rattle. I think I can eliminate that rattle the next time.
I also took some still photos at a rate of one every 60 seconds. They came out good also.
I think by being innovative you'll come up with something better. I hope you'll share with us.
Be safe and enjoy your boat.
Richard

@ coursevector and PurdueZach:

Dior at Performance Sail does sail repair. She repaired my main and I've been out with it several times since, a couple times with 15mph winds and it is holding up great.

Thanks. I contacted them and sent them pictures but haven't heard back yet.

I was really wanting to find someone that could do it by this weekend and they already said that would not be possible.

How bad was your main? About how much did it cost?

Can't remember how much it was and can't seem to find my receipt at the moment. I can tell you I was suprised at how reasonable it was. I had 2 good sized rips, several small holes and one batten pocket that was worn through.
