Renaming a 16

Hi everyone. Matt from Alaska.

A quick introduction: I have a couple of 16s but one is pretty much a donor boat for the other. The donor boat is an 80 and the good one is older. Old or not it sails really well, recorded 19.1 mph solo the other day in relatively light wind. My father also has two 70's era 16's both fully functional although they don't see much time on the water these days. Growing up he and my uncle raced competitively in a local circuit here in alaska, one of the boats was on the cover of a hobie magazine back in the day.

On to the question.

My boat was given a name by the previous owner (Sundowner), but I don't really care for it. I have read up on boat renaming ceremonies etc. but wonder if I need to do them. Here is the thing, the boat was never inscribed with the name anywhere. I would never have known it had a name had I not asked. Yeah I know, shouldn't have asked.

So what do you think, rename away or do the ceremony.

I bought a 16 and hated the name, I removed the name (in vinyl) from the side of the boat and put my own name on it. That said I'm not the least bit superstitious.

I'm not at all superstitious either but I did a bit of a ceremony to name/rename/christen my boat just for the lore of it. It was fun, and my twin 6 yo girls got a real kick out of it.

That's daddy enticing them further into this wonderful, lifetime sport with participation in a bit of funky pomp and circumstance. After that and the maiden voyage sailboats began appearing in much of their crafty projects and stories. Follow your own course dood.

Holly Moses, I renamed mine but forgot to do the ceremony !!!!

I guess thats why I had a fallen mast ( broken pin ), a 1-1/2 inch cut on the face from a slam from the Boom which ended in the water, and last time, the hobie took off sailing and dragged me for about a hundred yards before I got on top of the trampoline and managed to bring her back to the beach were my g.f. copilot was left by herself in shock.
I will do the right thing, and appologize to Poseidon and Neptune.

Thanks, sounds like I could go either way, but the renaming cerimony is a nice excuse for a party.... I'll probably go that way.

I would say 16 because it looks like the jib cars are on the frame.
