Sundancer,

I am transporting my Oasis successfully on my Subaru's roof rack, and its crossbars are 4' apart. It is turned upside down, but I have designs on using conduit inside swim noodles as rails to run lengthwise down the bottom and transporting the kayak right side up. There are two grooves that run most of the length of the hull that the rails would kind of fit into and provide support lengthwise.

I want to try transporting it right side up so I can mount some fishing mounts on the rails, and skip the rollover maneuver before hoisting the kayak. I also think this would make it easier to put the kayak on top of the Subaru solo. I can solo it into my 8' F150 bed easily, but I am thinking of downsizing to a Ranger, so I think I'll have to go either the roof rack or bed extender route for it.

Good luck with your Oasis. My wife and I are loving ours. With the controls up front on the 2011, I can skipper from up there where I can see obstructions better, be the bowman for landings, knock down the spray, and not be able to see any coasting going on behind me. I can also hear her suggestions better, while she can't hear my muttered replies at all, so it works out great for us. :D

Thanks.

Just bought and installed a ladder rack from PepBoys ($150). I couldn't maximize the whole distance of the bed do to the way the stake pockets are formed but it will work.

With the advertised 500 lb capacity I think I am ok. :)

I might get a little tricky by trying to run noodle covered PVC pipe over the crossbars with the PVC acting as a roller.

But then, I am a big fan of Rube Goldberg.

All the people I tt say they either love or know somebody that loves kayaking. I am really looking forward to it.

I called WildRiver today even though it has only been a week. They laughted a little. :).

I hope it comes in before I go under the knife.

update - ladderrack works great.

might do a little fine-tuning (like shortening the rear bar a liittle..

picked up a few do-dads when i picked up the oasis yesterday..
***

took it out today - sunday

took me awhile to get a rythm down to launch but i think i have it..

adjusted the drive pedal length, stowed the oar, adjusted the seat and took off.

leaned back and the left seat back eye popped out. going back to wildriver to have them take a look.

i am kinda surprised that the eye is only 'screwed into the plastic hull.. seems like with the potential pull it has to withstand, it would be backed up somehow..

well - turns out the 'pad eye's' threads were round and not cut sharp. wildriver installed a new one and i bought a spare ($1.35).

they opened a warrantee ticket on it incase there is other issues..

again, i am really surprised that they rely on threads in the plastic to hold it. i think i will try to find some well nuts and replace all 4.

thank you wildriver..

These fittings are very rarely problematic. I'd recommend you try the replacement; slap a little epoxy in the threads if you need a tighter connection (epoxy doesn't adhere well to PE; it would just serve to fill any gaps). Well nuts tend to have their own problems pulling out. 8)

I am going to try the replacement pad eye. I also picked up a 2nd one on the chance that I have another badly formed eye.

Because I am a tinkerer (sp?) I will continue to look for a 'replacement' method.

Wanna know how difficult it is to paddle/peddle w/o a backrest? LOL

Thanks.
