New word of the day: Vaka

A bit of background:

The center hull of a Tri is called a Vaka.
Amazing what you learn sometimes (unless your spell checker is offline...)

(is that a number 1 reef in the main or they just happy to see us) Can`t be as the wind can`t be more than 15 knots from the ripples on the water, go figger).
Naw, it`s just the light hitting the main near the boom...sloppy sail handling, (no wonder they`re crawling up the aka)

The word Vaka is an ancient polynesian term.

It's a little known fact that in early times the polynesian islands were originally populated by brave sailers from the San Diego area traveling on their Adventure Island boats (looking for better surfing).

Notice that Adventure Island has a V and two A's, clearly you can see the term Vaka was derived from 'Adventure Island', and the k was added for clarity because VAA sounded stupid.

Funny, ConFusioneng. Can't believe that info is not to be found in my 425 page copy of the "Canoes of Oceania" reference book!

Up until now, I had believed "Vaka" was the general term for "a canoe" here in and around Polynesia.

Tongan = Vaka
Maori= Waka
Hawaiian= Wa'a

There would be separate terms for large or small canoes, outrigger styles, sailing canoes, double-hull voyaging canoes, war canoes - I think you sea where this is going..

One of my favorites is: Wa'a Kialoa. "Long, swift sailing canoes".

And that is your 'Hawaiian word for the day'.

I fell on the floor in shock yesterday watching a show called 'who really discovered america' on the History channel. They said that America was actually discovered and settled by the Polynesians sometime around 1000BC just south of San Diego (according to the show). It turns out the bone structure of ancient Polynesian peoples are unique and easily identified by their jaw and head shapes. They found several settlements in both north and south america.

Now how do you think they got to America, must have been on their Adventure Islands of course so what I said earlier may be true " who knew". They unfortunately didn't go into any detail about their boats on the show.

I'm thinking it's just a matter of time before they dig up an ancient Wa'a Kialoa (translation - Adventure Island). I'm only speculating here but to make the boats I'm assuming they dug a big pit and lit a fire in the pit, they then made a rotomold from clay (didn't have steel, bronze or aluminum yet) and spun it on a stick (just like they roast pigs now) over the fire (covered with palm leaves of course) to make the Vaka and AMA's.

Now they are proposing to change all the history books, Columbus is being kicked to the curb. I propose they replace his holiday with Hobie day. So come Oct 12, we will all be saying "Happy Hobie day"

Now you have me interested in this history stuff.

Now I'm off to discover the origins of the Hobie indians, there could be a connection. (LOL)
