That actually happened to me a few weeks ago, I got bonked on the back of the head by a kayak. We were scuba diving on the Crystal river (crystal clear water and lots on manatees) in Florida, we went into one of the springs swimming around (in scuba tanks) minding our own business when a kid in a kayak ran right into me (must have thought I was a manatee and was going in for the kill). Just a funny story, but it could have been far more dangerous if it had been a beach with a surf.

Hey Bob just going through some old threads I'm using to help out 2 dear friends who are interested in either 2 AI's or a TI.

I quote you: in Florida, we went into one of the springs swimming around (in scuba tanks) minding our own business when a kid in a kayak ran right into me (must have thought I was a manatee and was going in for the kill).

I've never seen a Manatee other than on HDTV. You mean to tell me kids there use their kayaks to try to harm these creatures??

I heard a report today on the Radio that in 2011 in BC, Canada, Fish and Wildlife had to shoot 160 Black Bears as once they taste Human food they become a threat to anyone. Moving them is not an option.

Considering that Manatees are harmless but serve a highly useful function to keep the vegetation down, wouldn't it be nice if those creatures could be trained to defend themselves from ignorant brats like the one you mentioned.
(perhaps crossed genetics might work...)
I'm not a tree hugger but I really feel for animals that have been mistreated. It's worse when they can't defend themselves.

Seems even a Bear doesn't stand much of a chance when they get introduced to 'Human Garbage'.

Be well, Bob,
Better days

I would think it would be extremely easy (thinking about the original problem here) to kayak out either paddling or using the Mirage Drives with the mast strapped to the akas. Standing up in the front seat and stepping the mast would be very easy. Probably even easier than standing on the ground doing it while the boat was on the trailer.

Why couldn't you just pedal out with the mast up and the sail furled?

Dah, I have no idea why none of the rest of us thought to mention that. He could also have his AMA's folded in so the boat doesn't look so bad ass, unless there's surf, then I think I'd keep them out.

Come to think of it, thats what I typically do myself automatically whenever I go in or out of harbors or busy beaches. I furl all the sails and clean everything up just outside the harbor then pedal in. You see all the regular sail boats do the same thing, they then use their kicker motor to go in and out of the harbor. Our advantage is the mirage drive. If the sail is up and furled, it's no more dangerous then if it were laying on the deck in my opinion your just a kayak at that point. But it's not my opinion that counts.

You hit the nail on the head fusioneng, my boat looked bad ass! I had my tramps on and the sail furled so looked pretty serious which I think was part of the problem. As Matt said if it has a mast with a furled sail there is an assumption it's a sailboat. It very much felt like the owner didn't give a stuff about me he was more worried about the Sherif giving him a hard time. He only appeared when the sheriff was spotted about three hundred yards off shore. Turns out the sherif was towing a log about thirty feet long out of the middle of the lake and wasn't concerned about me. Guess it's the price to pay for having such a cool craft! 8)
