partitioning the hull

another question..

i was giving the compartments a going over the other day.

is there a way to 'partition the hull' into reasonably water tight sections?

for example, with our Oasis, we have the forward storage. if i form a bulkhead of sorts can i afix it with a sealant or expando foam to make it either water resistant (for drier stowage) or as a holder (small ice chest, fish/crab well) to the rest of the hull??

seems it would be nice to have the hatches access dedicated areas and not allow anything that is lose to travel the length of the hull.

thoughts??

I would really think about it before you do it.

Consider the stability/safety problems that might arise should any one of the compartments flood. I know the kayak will float sufficiently to support your weight and still be able to navigate half full of water. I don't know what would happen if just say the forward or aft compartment flooded. It may make things safer or cause a problem. You could probably add some additional flotation in certain compartments to correct this.

Also consider that the kayak was designed with one compartment. Their might be a reason for this.

Not saying it's not a good idea. I thought about something like this but decided it would be too much trouble to clean.

I mounted a temp bucket up front for crabs. Works really good. I send you a picture if you like.

First one is on the Adventure and second the Outback. I used a three gallon bucket, but you could use a five. Heated the bottom of the bucket to somewhat conform to the kayak, then figured the best place for the bungees.
If one could come across a spare hatch cover, you could cut it out to match a bucket, then seal it to prevent sinking should you turn over, and they would be go to go. I like mine because I can move it around the kayak or transfer the crabs without any difficulty.

I was having a lot of problems with things sliding from the area where I put them to a different area of the kayak and would have to hunt a lot of things down. Took water noodles and cut them to the right size and bent them into place between the sides to section of front, middle, read. No more chasing gear around. Worked pretty well.

Wally world is having a sell on their pool noodles, both the normal diameter and the large diameter. I will buy a couple for our Oasis and my soon to be here Revo 11.

weather and work has gotten in the way of a 4th outing so i am sitting hear still thinking about the partitioning issue..

what about expando foam either sprayed raw in the locations 'neaded' or within a plastic bag with both methods 'shaped' but some rough cut material to define the walls??

Pool noodles? I had to look that up and I'm still not sure what they are. Please expound.

Spray in closed cell foam, within a plastic wrap kept to a max 3 or 4" width seems like a reasonable idea... but you'd have to come up with a bag for it.

Keep in mind the Titanic was compartmentalized also... lol

Pool noodles are a foam tube about 4' long and 3" in diameter. They are simple a float for kids to play with in a pool. Here's a pic of kids using them on this site.

These pictures are not the best but. I use packing foam blocks from eletronics, easy to cut to shape with a fillet knife and wedge tightly. Stopped all hacth leakage to.

Good idea. I have a bunch of closed cell foam used for insulating steam pipes. I may make some "boxes" that I could store stuff in or partion off spaces. I will just leave room for water to travel so if it gets wet in side it wont "pool" in one area.
