As I understand no one has ever got under 3 kilogram per haka. If anyone has, please tell me. Otherwise I will try. If I succeed, I will post pictures. :D

Failures will not be documented.

That would be extremely light. Aluminum and fiberglass light.

The wood ones start around 6 Kilos each.

Good luck!

Thomas, there never are failures.

Please document all failures. It will save me the trouble of trying a failed approach.

I too want to save weight. I have a couple of junky old windsurfers in my yard that look an awful lot like sources of free foam to me. I also have some fiberglass left over from another project. I'm thinking glass over foam quarterdeck and/or hakas. Could be light, but I'm not even sure it will work.

I'll be sure to document failures. ;)

Well you can easily see what amount of documentation that will result in. Compared to post some pics of a successful work. :D :D :D

NOHUHU

:) BIG TIME CONGRATULATIONS on your Haka Bench Seat post going over 10,000 views and on to it's twentieth page! :)

This is truly amazing and you deserve big props for your creativity and hard work. It's been very exciting following this article and seeing the different approaches that people have taken. I have some sense of what this must feel like for you, but you must be very pleased yourself. Way to go Dude :!:

Thanks Sun E! Thanks Hobie. Thanks Kahikolu! Thanks everyone for contributing fresh ideas and collaborating on our little worldwide experiment.

This thing is only beginning. It's really all about alternate ways of sailing these great boats, and improving the functionality and ride. Truth is, I do get a tingle everytime one of you crusty sailors leaves the cockpit and "sees the light".

I hope everyone will continue to post to this thread with their custom seating designs and sailing experiences.

Should be fun to watch. Spread the love,..

My hakas:

The rough draft, made with 2 rough cut ceder 2x4s.

The final product, made with a 2x6 and a 2x4.

I made them back in October but never got around to posting them. They weigh about 13 pounds. I hollowed out the undersides somewhat to reduce the weight.

Thanks for the idea Nohuhu!

cheers

Thanks Yakman. Wecome to the club.

Had not thought about channeling the thicker wood. Good alternative to adding a truss. Needs to be strong with only 2 boards, right?

I like the "comfort" edges. ;-). A real mark of distinction.

BTW, I'm refinishing my Akas and will be removing the Haka PVC, I think. The metal was a PIA to sand and I want to avoid scratching them this time.

Hakas AND tramps huh? "TRAKAS"??

chrisj, i like your quarterdeck and intend to copy it. is it possible for you to give the dimensions, including cut pieces, as i too have an AI but cant measure and cut without a plan and the AI is hours away.

any tips or ideas on the qd would be appreciated, as would a description of how it is held down under sail.

many thanks
tw.

Hi TW,
I'm happy to share any info with you about the quarterdeck, but my measurements may not be exactly right for your boat. Do you have the old pin fitting akas or the newer snap-in style? I made mine for the newer style fittings and the design would need to be modified to fit the old ones.

It's a lot easier to make if you have the boat there. I sort'a built it on the boat, so I could see how each bit fitted as I went.

It's not "held down" at all. When hiking out, the weight is borne by the akas and crossbraces. I cut it fairly snug, so it doesn't tend to move around. I guess a prudent person would bungee it down, so it doesn't dislodge in extreme conditions.

I'm also fiddling with a new design which improves the ability to pedal from the deck, at the expense of being able to pedal from the existing seatwell.

10,000 views. I'm really dragg'n the chain on this one. Sounds like a good winter project. I spose I'd better get onboard, ( or is it outboard ).

Well done NOHUHU.

P.S. It may be a good time to recap on the pros and cons of tethering ourselves. Although you've pulled off a great design kayakman7, without a tether, it looks like a disaster waiting to happen. I'd hate to see all that hard work sailing off into the distance.

Slaughter, Stringy and I were talking about you at our meetup last week. We agreed that once you'd tried sailing on hakas, or a wing, there'd be no stopping you.
We were also thinking it may be about time for a sail up your way.

Chris - I'm certainly up for it anytime. I'm in Sydney this weekend but, depending upon the weather, all other weekends, up until the end of June, are free. Are you thinking Lake Mac or Port Stephens or Myall ? Either, or. Travel wise, it's a bit easier for me than you blokes so you choose and I'll be there.

Thanks NOHUHU - I'll just sail on over. You turn left at New Zealand don't ya ?
