I was wondering what you guys think is the best book for a novice sailor for the hobie 16. I'm looking for basic direction and plan on learning the most on the water. Also, where would be the easiest place to find a step by step rigging guide for a 1979 hobie 16? Thanks

Your Hobie dealer will have an assembly manual and video for you, nothings change, actually the book/video looks like they were made in the 70's.

Also check out the Hobie Catalog, there are some great books and videos as well in there.

There is a free pdf file in the support section of this web site explaining how the boat is rigged.

There is catamaran racing for the 90's - I think this is a pretty good book - around $20.00

Though it's not Hobie 16 specific, by far the best book I've found that's still currently available for novice catamaran sailors is the revised edition of Phil Berman's classic Catamaran Sailing from Start to Finish (not to be confused with the more advanced Catamaran Racing from Start to Finish  )

After having looked through many different catamaran instructional books, as well as the UCLA Marine Aquatic Center's cat manual, I and several of the other UCLA sailing instructors advise students to pick up the Berman book as it covers pretty much everything you might want to know.

Also, check out Hobie U's website for a large, but comprehensive download about Hobies and sort through it for material pertaining to the 16. Both the Berman book and Hobie U materials are on my coffee table right now (and they don't impress anybody but me, and maybe my wife  )

By far I think that Catamaran Sailing From Start to Finish by Phil Berman is the best book, its down to earth and easy to read, as well as instructional, and it covers all cats, but mostly deals with Hobie's as the model. Great book, definatly reccomend it to anyone looking to increase their knowledge in sailing.
