Your boat is a 1983, I'm not sure what is different with the signature models but someone one here will! Congrats on the boat and good luck, let us know if you need anything!

There is a crazy influx of us "newbies" here on the board. :) I'm glad to see that the H16 is still such a popular cat. Makes me happy that I purchased mine to know that there is still a good and helpful following of people out there.

Here is what I found regarding serial numbers: http://www.hobiecat.com/support/warrant ... erial.html

Yet another newbie here. My darling boyfriend and I just bought a 1977 16ft Hobie Cat. It's in great shape and we love it. It is really nice that this forum exists, it has answered the million questions we have had. :D

Hi Folks,

Just picked up a used, but in excellent shape, 1980 H-16 a couple weeks back, and am looking forward to lots of fun & relaxing hours, getting back into sailing. I grew up sailing small & larger sailboats on Lake Erie, including time on a Hobie 16. Currently, I'm a boat owner who's been "between boats" for longer than I'd care to think about. I discovered this forum after the second weekend working on the boat, and was delighted to find that many of the questions my friend and I had were asking ourselves were discussed here. I'm hoping to find a some other local hobie folks that we can learn from as well.

Yet another newbie here. I grew up sailing Sunfish, Sunflower, Lasers, and full size keel boats (28-36'). I'm just returning to sailing after 15+ years and refitting a Catalina 27. I couldn't stand it any longer and purchased a '75 h-16 this past week. We spent Monday rigging the boat in our yard and am looking forward to a day of sailing on our local lake this Sunday. The catamaran is completely new to me. While rigging the boat it is clear this thing is built for speed. I can hardly wait to start learning what this thing will and will not do. Not to mention learning how to sail it. I'm 46 and haven't felt this kind of anticipation for years.

Well good luck with the cat tomorrow. Where in sac are you sailing? and does lake tahoe get good wind? im a south bay area guy, and mainly stick with reservoirs and lakes down here and a dab of the ocean, but im looking to do some camping trips with sailing built in. (kinda had bad luck with clear lake / lake berryessa), and havent been to tahoe in years.

but to tell you what the cats can and cant do... It Can go fast. It can go really fast. And It cant turn. And thats pretty much all there is to it.

worldinchaos,
We live in Colfax (1/2 way between Sacratamatoe and Tahoe). We'll be sailing primarily on Rollins Lake in Colfax (about 10 min's away). Regarding Tahoe, there is plenty of wind. It gets "ocean like" most afternoons with white caps being generated by the wind. The camping/sailing endeavor you mention is one of the other reasons for our purchase.
p.s.: love the handle. It is no doubt in chaos.

worldinchaos,
Hobie Cat Tag, eh? Sounds fun. Reminds me of the truck commercial with the guy playing tag with a mountain lion. Give me a few trips out with this rocket, and I'm in!

I should take the Tuna up to lake tahoe. sounds like fun. im just still learning my 14, and am a little apprehensive about soloing a boat in any body of water that is too big to swim out of (such as the ocean)

Hobie Cat Tag...
Yeah, you loosely or velcro tie flags onto shrouds and try to grab the other persons. Its a little dangerous though. Not reccommended for good quality boats. Persons with heart diseases or respiratory problems should consult a doctor before playing Hobie Cat Tag. Common side affects may include but are not limited to: nausea, bloating, high fever, headache, and pitchpoling, as well as severe hatred of another for heading up at the last second.

Could you post in the places to sail catagory what you think of Rollin's lake. I live in Sacramento and am totally bored with the 5-10mph days on Folsom. Does Rollin's lake get consistent wind? I'm looking for a place that's about an hour or so away with good wind.

Thanks,

Adam

Here's the scoop on what I found at Rollins Lake yesterday:
1) Lake sailing is quite different from S.F. Bay. Read "shifty winds that come from all directions, and change that direction constantly".
2) The wind arrives at about 6:00 pm. Earlier than that is spent waiting for, looking for the next puff or breeze - no real wind to speak of. This was interesting as there seemed to be adequate breeze while in the parking lot, looking at flags at the marina, etc. However, down at lake level, we ran out of breath trying to fill the sails
3) I decided to try Folsom next time. Hmmm. reading your post, maybe the trek to Tahoe is worth it (which means wet suit time).

We spent the afternoon on the water. Sailed most of the lake, slowly. There's enough of a breeze to move, but not really fill the sails. We did a lot of "manual" sailing. Physically moving the sails as the wind was insufficient to move them across the boat when tacking or gybing. That being said, it was wonderful to be back out on the water after many years, and the burgers at the marina are outstanding.

You won't need a wetsuit at Tahoe this time of year. It is cold, but you'll be up out of the water. Lake temp is about 64F and the outside temp is in the 80's. I was just up there last weekend, and swam most of the afternoon.

Thanks for the info,

Adam
