Been looking for a 16 and came accross a '72 which looks no older than 5 or 6 years old. It was supposedly owned by the local Hobie dealer at the time and stored for 20 plus years. The hulls are rock solid and all hardware seems in excellent shape. The bottom of the hulls have no wear and very little scratches. Hulls are orange and yellow with a yellow tramp (special model?).
Question is, is there a problem getting parts for a '72? Is a newer model much improved? Seller wants $2000, seem high but the boat looks in better shape then most used Hobie's I've seen. Includes trailer with storage box and cat trax.
Please help.

It depends on what you want it for.

If you are just fooling around and have no intention of racing, then I'd go for it. $2K is not that bad depending on the condition of the sails / trampoline.

If you want to race, you'd have to make a couple of modifications, most notably a Comptip and a non-conducting tiller extension. But otherwise, the boat is class legal to race.

If you want to race competitively, you'd need a newer boat. The '72 is probably too heavy and would need too many upgrades (like new sails) to make it competitive.

BTW, the colored hulls were not a special model. In the early '70's, you could order any combination of 12 different colors of hulls / decks.
