Hi everyone!!!
First of all this post is not intended to bad mouth anyone or criticize!

Two weeks ago I ordered a new blue mesh tramp for my H16 from the local hobie dealer, everyone can see Im from Puerto Rico so there are no doubts...

I have the 2006-07 hobie cataloge with the price list in the back and shows the tramp to be $427.00.

I paid $474.00 including "tax" and S/H.

Does it sound right?

thanks!

Im just looking for some peace of mind!

What is your tax rate....this sounds about right we're 7.57%here, make a tramp around $460, 17 bucks for shipping is about right, and even if its a bit more you are suporting your local dealer! Thats worth every cent when he has that littel part to get you back on the water ASAP!

I just picked up a new (used H16) that needs a tramp. I'm nervous that I might go through the thing even though there are no holes in it. Mine is blue as well and pretty faded (bleached out). I was going to go with a Hobie replacement part, but $500 is a pretty stiff hit! What other choices are there for less money?

BTW, no racing for me so I'm not worried about having 'all original'.

down side to the less expensive alterative is they do not last as long, while everyone think Hobie parts are a bit more because of the class rules, its not, its because they are built better and last longer! Maybe you can find a dealer that is sitting on a "demo/display" tramp. We do this from time to time so we can have a new boat on display but take the tramp off when we sell it and put a new tramp on it, this way the customer gets a new tramp w/o ayd weathering on it.

As far as Hobie tramps go, the $450 or so, isn't bad when you consider how long you will have the tramp. I have had two Hobies in my time and I bought both of them with tramps that were about 20 years old. They had both sat out in the sun thier entire lives and where solid vinyl. I did not replace teh tramp on my H16 when I sold it ('86 for the tramp and boat) a few years ago. I finally replaced my H18 tramp this season ('82). 24 years is not bad for a tramp. I could probably have made it another year.

Alternative brands cost about half but only last about 25% as long as Hobies. You will end up spending the same amount (if not more) over the time you own the boat and have to replace the tramp more often. In my opinion, the tramps are worth the money.

Sales tax rate here in Puerto Rico right now is 1.5% just started a few months ago,, before we only had income tax.
Did the math and seems to be like this:
427 tramp cost per catalogue
6.41 tax
40.49 shipping

Just came from the hobie dealer this morning. I paid the full amount on the 30th of Aug, the guy sent the order on the 4th of Sept to "Hobie Cat". They are supposed to use UPS second day air for deliveries...and still hasnt arrived at the shop.

He also explained that sometimes Hobie Cat doesnt process orders as fast and some may take weeks to actually ship out to the dealer. Giving me the impression that they are in no hurry.

Damn! why am I paying for second day air, when it could take weeks before they ship out anyways????

thanks!

2nd day air should be 2nd day air..Hobie always comes thru with shipping, unless the part is backordered! 40 bucks for 2nd day air is good deal!
if the order was palced on the 4th, labor day, it would not have shipped untill the 5th, so the 7th you should have had it, ask them for a tracking number.

Its kind of dificult to ask for a tracking #.
Ill have to get the guy at the shop to call Hobie Cat and ask for it....I dont wanna sound desperate or looking too deep for explanations, need to have the local hobie shop on my side.

Still I feel like somewhere along the line the service is not as expected!
And wasting $$$ hurts like hell!

This may sound like a joke but Im also waiting on a sailfeeder kit and the starboard lance cleat....these items were missing from my previous order when delivered (couple of weeks before placing this one for the tramp). Which included both lance cleats, convertible harness, stickers, acc mounting bases etc....They should include these two pnd items in this shipment but who knows....

thanks!

I've been watching some tramps on ebay. Good prices for a mess tramp, running around $200 by the time it's all said and done. Anyone had any experience with them? Amish made. Or are these some of the ones you are mentioning that don't hold up?

Thanks. The Dog 8)

Ive seen the Salty Dog tramps on Ebay for 280.00 and will consider buying one, chaging to the new hobie tramp for class racing events only. Still not convinced of their worth.
At the same time I may just use the Hobie brand tramp always and not buy any other in ten years.
Ill rig it with bungee cord to extend its life and reduce stress on the grommets. And believe me after spending so much to refit, my H16 will always be covered from the elements when not in use.

Is it a good idea to also release tension on the tramp lines or bungee when not in use?

thanks!

Guys:

Unless you are at a National event, I don't think anyone will say anything about a non-Hobie tramp. I have a dark blue mesh Sunrise and love it.

I'm so glad that I went with a hobie brand tramp! I had placed an order for a non hobie tramp but it was taking far longer than I expected to get to me... so I cancelled it and got a hobie one from Sun Jammers.. it's a beautiful black mesh tramp and well worth the $427 + shipping!

Anyone ever buy the materials and make their own tramp? Any idea where I can buy the mesh tramp material??? With a few yards of material, brass grommets, and a sewing machine, it sounds like a fairly cheap project...

I think I'd rather pay $200 for a tramp that will last 10 years than pay $450 for one that will last 20 years. The reason most 'cheap' tramps fail is because the cheap stitching breaks down under UV exposure. Gluing the seems or using something like Teflon stitching that will not break down will greatly extend the life of the seems. If the tramp is covered with a tarp while not in use, the tramp will last a LOT longer. What I fear though is getting punctures in the tramp and it can happen to both the 'good' and the 'cheap' tramps... which is why I'd rather buy a cheaper tramp every 10 years than buy a good one and hope nothing happens to it within the next 20 years.

If the cheap tramp was actually $200, then you might be right.. but when I ordered mine, it was $295 + shipping.... If i get double the usage and probably better comfort out of the OEM one, I'm getting my money's worth.

427 for 20 years of usage vs. 295 +295 for 20 years out of usage.. I'm actually saving $163 over a 20 year comparison. Obviously those years of use are completely made up... but from what I heard, the Hobie ones are so much nicer and more durable.

The fact that I took off the original yellow vinyl tramp to replace with a new mesh one makes me realize that even sitting out in the weather, the hobie tramps are pretty high quality! I was more worried about the lines holding the tramp on than I was about the old vinyl tramp itself. I stood on it and I think it would have probably held up for the last part of this season but the rope on it was all rotten and nasty... so I just took the plunge and replaced it all. No regrets!

This will sound wierd to many of u but I actually finished building my own home made tramp last week. Bought the material at a local textile shop called Caribbean Textile, and the nickel plated spur grommets and set tool ordered from Sailrite. Bought a gross of 144 grommets #4. Spend two weeks sewing on my friends YUKI sewing machine with v92 polyester thread and setting grommets.

The tramp material name here localy is called "testolin" it comes in many weaves and colors...the one I bought was a slightly diff weave I thought was the same weight but when I finished the panels they are heavier than the old/worn one I used as pattern. Its light grey. I even did the hiking straps with a twist like the new hobie tramps.

I spent 140 dollars at the local textile shop and another 80 at Sailrite + shipping to PR.

Became frustated a few times sewing such large panels and measuring 10 times not to waste material and $$$.

In my opinion....DONT DO IT!! unless the materials are free and u wont be racing. Now I have the old worn tramp (good for nothing) the light grey I made that is not geood for racing and waiting on the Hobie original to be delivered.

Spending 140 + 80= 220 not bad if u want to learn how to make a tramp + nights after work.
Oh and the sewing machine is a YUKI walking foot industrial straight stitch,,,not many have these at home.

I still have mesh material left and will work on some mesh bags ect...

Sailrite has the right mesh weave used in Hobie tramps (blue or black) but its more expensive that what I bought. So expect ure proyect to cost more than what It cost me....

Buy the aftermarket tramp if ure not gonna race,,, if not buy the hobie original!
