2 part foam for delam repair

WOW, I enjoy causing trouble !!!! coralreefer, boy you are right !! I sure have taken heat about this !!! A whole lot more than you did !! Your idea is out there too, but its still working. You have pretty big surf to sail thru, my sister lives in Melbourne Fl. I did not know that just CONSIDERING a different way of doing things would make people mad, espically Mbounds, sorry dude, I do appreciate your input & knowledge, I am a thinker & a tinkerer, part of my job is trying to find a different way of doing things, it spreads into other parts of my life,, drives my wife crazy,,,but she loves me,,,I hope,,, everybody take a breath,,,good,,,I buy some epoxy,,,then do what coralreefer did,,,

I don't think that we are mad or upset at you (at least I am not). I design & build cutomised industrial machinery for a living. I think outside of the box constantly. But, I have learned that many times the tried and true method is the best. There is no reason to not try something new, but make sure you understand how the system works that you are tinkering with. I believe in some of the previous threads about this subject I, and others, went into detail of how layers of the deck work.

I think the frustration expressed in this thread is due to the repeated inquires about the foam and the constant challenging of what everyone said. You are dealing with a group of very passionte people that many of whom have been doing this for decades.

I couldn't see the results of your idea. Have you posted any? I have a H16 w/delam of the decks from tip to toe. Each hull has an inspection port installed in front of the front pylon. Inspecting thru those openings, I've found that the delamination gap is way more than the paper thickness! At some areas it is about 1/8". Between pylons there is warping and it seems like an elongated uneven bubble of 1/2" thickness at some areas, full of air! Therefore, there is no way of filling with "Git Rot". Epoxy, on the other hand, would be too thick to penetrate all the way in the bottom & top layers of the sandwitch foam. Besides, it would require 2-3 gallons of it, which would greatly add to the weight. For this reason, I am thinking of using the "Great Stuff" to fill the big gaps; and then using "Git Rot" to fill the remaining (if any) paper thick gaps (after the foam pushed the layers tight). I know all the concerns about the foam. I'll post my experience when I'm done. Anybody with foam experience? Couldn't find any, so far..

I fill my hulls from the tips to the front pylons with polyurethane marine foam. DO NOT USE GREAT STUFF it will disintergrate and it's not waterproof. It takes 4 cu ft of 4# foam for each hull and will increase the weight of each hull by 16#`. If your not racing the extra wieght will not matter. I did this 2.5 years ago on my 76 and the hull are still rock hard with no separation and no deterioation of the foam. I sail in only in the ocean and my boat takes a beating. Just finished a week of very large swells and good NE wind from Hurricane Florence, boat still in good shape. The foam is a 2 part liquid that is mixed and poured into the hulls. Its the same foam used by Boston Whaler and other boat manufactures. Do a google on polyurethane foam and you will find a place here in FL that sells the product.
