The small blocks let the sheet run through them faster and allow you to tack without hang-ups. I would recommend using a very small diameter jib sheet. Typically, you would have the two clew blocks attached to the jib with a small shackle.
To get the jib from hanging up on the mast, tie a bungee line from one side of the front beam, then pass it through the middle of the cleat on the front of the mast and then tie it to the front frame on the other side. Make sure your jib sheet is above the bungee. This way, it is held up in the air and won't catch on anything.
